Chapter2

“Josephine, I want you to marry my son," he says. Then I looked at him as though he didn't know what he was talking about. My head is trying to decode what my boss just said to me, he wants me to marry his son. A sudden gush of anger swept through me, my life is not a cast in a movie that the director twists to and fro. I can't believe I am hearing this from my boss whom I have respected so much and worked diligently for. My boss wants me to marry his son and this keeps ringing in my head. My boss looked at me expecting a reply. I was just unmoved by where I sat. “I know it is a proposal you are not expecting, and you are likely not to accept,” he says What was he expecting, should I pause my current life and move in with his son to become his wife? “Josephine, you are the only lady I thought of for George. You are smart, beautiful, and loyal to me in the office. I could not have thought of any other lady that would do this other than you” he says “I know this is a lot for you to take in right now, but I am desperately in need of a wife for my son to make him responsible and fit for the CEO position. I will not force you, Josephine, take your time and think about it” he continues “OK sir” I reply Those were the only words that could come out of my mouth. While I thought he had finished with me, He added “I will give you a sum of $100 million for you to marry my son, which will get you the life you need to be the CEO's wife if you eventually get married to him. Then I felt more angry than before. Who does he think he is, buying my life with money, so his wayward son can become the CEO of the company? “You can take today off, so you can think well about the proposal,” he says. I stood up and left his office. I took the day off as directed by my boss and I headed home from work. I had a terrible migraine as I took a cab for the journey home. I think my head has had enough of the event that played out with my boss at the office today. When I got to my apartment, I took a shower, when I was done, took a pain reliever, drank a cup of water, and headed to bed to rest since I didn't want to think about the proposal yet. A call woke me up a few hours later. I never knew I would sleep off. I picked up the call and a deep baritone voice echoed in. ‘'Is this Miss Josephine Ray?’ he asks 'Yes I am' I reply We need you now at the hospital. Your sister is in a critical condition. Immediately, I jumped up, changed my clothes, took my handbag and left my apartment, heading to the hospital. ………………………… At the hospital, I met the doctor who called me. He is the doctor in charge of my sister's treatment. He has never called me before and for him to do that, it shows something is wrong. He led me to his office and he began to talk, “ Your sister's heart condition is deteriorating daily, and she needs a heart transplant as soon as possible. She is now in a critical condition and if it is not done within 7 days from now, it will lead to you losing her”, he says I took a deep breath with tears clouding in my eyes. I do not want to lose my sister, she is the only family I've had since our parents both died in an auto accident 6 years ago. I can't bear to lose Lucy to the hands of death. I don't think I will survive the pain that comes with it. Lucy has always been a support to me and the best younger sister I could ask for. Most people think we are twins because of our striking resemblance. She was 21, working as a sales assistant in a Jewelry shop when she had a heart attack 3 months ago which led her to the hospital. I had to start looking for employment immediately since it was just a week since I graduated from college, and she is the reason I took the position of secretary I was offered by Davis Company. And now, I still don't have the money the hospital is demanding for her surgery, even with my untouched 3 months' salary, it still did not measure up to the demand. This is so pathetic. 'Miss Ray, that is all I want to say to you. You need to act fast to save the life of your sister. You should be lucky since you already have a donor, the next is the kidney transplant”. He added, bringing me back from my thoughts. “Thank you, doctor, I will get back to you as soon as I can, “ I say “All right and enjoy the rest of the evening,” he says We shook hands and I left for my sister's room in the hospital. When I got to Lucy's room in the hospital, it was not a sight to behold, seeing my sister in such a condition. Tubes and machines surrounded her small body. Her chest rises and falls, indicating she is having a deep sleep. She still looks pretty in her hospital gown. Seeing her like this brought tears to my eyes. How can my younger sister be in this kind of condition? This is not a good sight to behold. I have to make sure my sister gets her life back and sources funds for her surgery as soon as possible. I took a chair and sat beside her, touching her hands softly. I did not want to stir her up. The doctor's warning echoed in my head, and I felt pity for myself because of the limited time I had to save my sister's life. I can't reach out to Richard, my boyfriend, because I know he doesn't have that huge amount of money and I don't want him to be involved because of his recent attitude towards me. I don't want to feel more indebted to him. So, who will help me? The only help will be from my boss's proposal today, the proposal to get married to his son. It should be the least I can do to save my sister's life. I picked up my phone and dialed my boss' number, and he picked up the first ring. Just 2 words settled it. “I agree,” I say.
