Chapter3

I parked my car and strolled into Davis Company. I went straight into my dad's office, taking the lift to the top floor where his office is located. I knocked once, not waiting for his reply. I stepped in facing the man who called me 20 minutes ago for an urgent meeting with him in his office which I had no clue about. I feigned a bit of anger because I was with my friends at a club having a good time when his call came in to disrupt my fun. I had to rush down to his office because of the urgency in his voice concerning the meeting. ‘You should at least wait for me to reply before you step into my office ‘ he says I am not a fan of waiting for people's reply before entering a place, especially in this company. I know he wanted to prove a point and that is why he spoke about it. (I rolled my eyes to reply to him) and he looked at me disgustingly. That has always been the way we communicate since mum died, and I don't care what he thinks about me. “Have your seat" he says “Can you tell me why you urgently told me to come to your office? I reply “George, have your seat, “ he says again, now adding my name. I hate it when he does that. He won't back down until I sit, and I reluctantly have my seat. “I am retiring very soon” he started, “ and the company needs a responsible adult who will fit into the CEO's position,” he says I crossed my hands, listening to where the conversation was heading. My dad is not the one to beat around the bush and I know very soon, I will get what he has to say. “I mentioned your name to the Board of Directors as the next CEO of the company, but it was met with stiff opposition owing to your bad reputation,” he says I cursed the Board of Directors under my breath. My father owns the company, they should hold their opinion to themselves. As though reading my mind, he interrupted my thoughts by saying “The Board of Directors has some shares in the company, and they have the right to decide who they want as their leader.” I was getting furious about where the conversation was heading. “So I have been given 3 months to prove you will be responsible for fitting into the position or will they give the position to your Cousin Richard.” “Richard,” I say “Yes Richard” he affirm I have never liked Richard for anything, he keeps proving he is better than me and people also think that way about him being better than I in all ways. Having gone to college on a paid scholarship and coming to work in my father's company, he received accolades from my dad. It makes me dislike him. And now, he is the best choice to head my dad's company. No, this can't be possible. I need to prove that I am capable of becoming the CEO of Davis Company. “So I came up with a plan,” he says “What plan?” I ask “Plan to get married, so you can be responsible” he replies “Get me married,” I say (I busted out angrily) “Am I a chess player you can play around with” (I laughed) “What sort of plan is that and why do you think I will agree?” I ask. “Young man, watch your mouth ( he says angrily), I came up with this plan, so you will not lose your inheritance as my son, and you think the plan is not good enough?” “All right Dad, calm down,” I say (still laughing as I tell him to calm down) “So who is going to be my would-be wife” I ask Then there was silence in the room, as though he was trying to contemplate not mentioning the name of my would-be wife. I looked him in the eyes waiting for him to reply to my question. “Josephine,” he says “Who is Josephine?” I ask I don't think I know the person he is talking about. “Josephine, my secretary” he replies I don't know much about Josephine lady, I have seen her a couple of times when I come to the office and I do not bother to ask about her name. Who cares? Since I don't have any business with her, knowing her name is a waste of my precious time. “But I don't know her,” I say “Then you have to get to know her,” he replies “Why would she agree to this plan? Doesn't she have a life, family, or probably a boyfriend?” I ask “You will get to know that later” he replies I hated this plan. Who would have thought I, George Davis, would be getting married soon, all because of my inheritance? I do not like this plan for a bit, but I have no choice but to accept it if I don't want to lose my position to my Cousin, Richard. I will get married to her, be the CEO, and after some months, we will divorce. That is very easy. I looked at my dad and I told him I agreed to his plan. He looked at me, feeling proud of my decision to get married. I do not have a choice, if getting married will prove me to be fit for the CEO position considering my not-so-good background then I am in. It is not as though I care so much about the position, but my cousin occupying it is something I can't bear to see. So right now I need to prove my worth and get married. My dad scribbled out a number on a paper and handed it to me. “This is her number, call her, she has also agreed to the plan,” he says I took the paper from him and put it in my breast pocket. But why would she decide to get married to someone like me, someone whom she doesn't know, just because her boss wanted her to do so? Is it for the money I am sure my father will offer her? She should be a cheap girl then, all for the money. But that is her life. Mine is to stick to the plan, get married to her, become the CEO, and get a divorce. I headed out of my dad's office after collecting the paper and I zoomed off.
