Chapter 4

Asher's POV After the call yesterday,I kept thinking and looking at my phone to see if she called but there was nothing. "Are you sure you're okay?" My friends asked. "Yes." I answered. "You've been looking at your phone since morning." David said stating the obvious. "I asked my dad to send me some money but he hasn't sent it yet." I lied, knowing they'll buy it. "Boss man, better sponsor our meal when it comes through." They hailed. I wouldn't tell them this, but I had enough money in my account to last me years since we were very well to do and I can't just go around saying it because it would sound like I was bragging and that wasn't me. "Of course, I'll call you." I told them. "See Tiffany dey come, when you go gree for this girl?" Charles asked me in pidgin English. "Free me abeg." I replied since I wasn't as fluent as he was in pidgin English. "Hi guys, hy Asher." She greeted showing off her white set of teeths as she smiled widely. There were different responses from the guys as they all stared at her figure. She was our age mate but she got in earlier than us because she skipped a class,so automatically she became our senior. "Hi Tiffany." I greeted "You can call me Tiff and I want to invite you to my birthday this weekend,I hope to see you there." She said. "What about us?" David asked. "Of course, a friend of Asher is my friend." She replied and I desperately wanted to snort at that statement because friends don't try to get into each other's pants all the time. "Don't worry he'll be there." They assured her and she nodded before going back. I gave them a look which shut them up before they could say anything about her or the party to me. It's been about a week since I spoke to Jasmine but I couldn't get her voice out of my head, it was as though she hypnotized me with something when she called. "Is it strange that I want to hear Jasmine's voice again?" I asked David when we finally got to our room that evening. "It's not,but there are two things I can say about this situation." He started. "Okay,go ahead." I told him. "First, either she has a very nice voice or when she called she used a charm but I'll stay with the second one though." He finished but I didn't take him seriously. "She didn't even know my name." I argued "You think so? But if you think she has a nice voice why don't you message her or better still, call her." He suggested. "When I call her, what do you expect me to say?" I asked. "Ask after her best friend and I'm sure it'll flow from there." He advised. Though David was the worst person to ask for advice from,he was a little helpful now. "Thanks man." I said. "You owe me." He replied, and why didn't I see this coming? "What do you want?" I asked. "You're going to Tiffany's party." He said and I groaned. "Seriously, you could ask for anything but you had to ask for that." I said more in disbelief than surprise. "I couldn't think of anything else and I want to go to that party with you." He said. "You're starting to sound gay dude." I teased, even though I knew how straight he was. "You don't know, your sexiness might be messing with my head." He replied and this time,I made sure the pillow hit him on the face. "Stop being so violent." He said laughing and when I couldn't help it,I joined him. "But you should go at least,to have fun." He said, trying to convince me and make me see the reason I should go. "Okay, I'll go." I said finally giving in. "Yes." He said fist bumping the air. "i***t,just get out of my room and let me think of my life." I said playfully. Our house was a two room apartment,he had his own and I had mine but we share the same living room and that's where our friends stay when they visit. I tried to read for a while but it didn't work out well because my mind kept drifting so instead of wasting my time, I closed my book and took my phone to play a game. "What are the odds that she isn't going to pick if I call?" I thought but I didn't know what or how her mind works. I decided to take the risk to text and since there was no harm in trying I was going to do it no matter what comes out of it. "All this motivational speech for sending a text message?" I asked myself before laughing at how crazy I sounded. "Hi, it's Asher and I was wondering if your friend is okay?" I wrote before pressing the send button. Nothing happened, it was only delivered and it was done. "Did I make a mistake or what if she thinks I'm a creepy person?" This were the thoughts running in my head as I stared at my phone lying on the bed "Nay... she'll most likely just ignore me." I concluded and went to the bathroom. Maybe If I take a bath I'll feel better and probably sleep a little before my next class in the evening. I was in the bathroom when I heard my phone ring."was she calling back already?" I asked no one as I quickly stepped out with soap still on my body only to see that it was Charles asking if he could come over now so we would go to class together. "Were you expecting someone else's call?" He teased me but I wasn't in the mood. "Get out,I was in the bathroom." I answered and hung up on him. I went back to continue taking my bath and when I heard my phone sound again I didn't bother coming out to check it.when I was done,I went straight to bed and before I knew it,I dozed off. Later that evening,as I prepared for my class, I picked up my phone which I had thrown away when Charles called and to my greatest surprise, there was a message from her and it showed two hours ago meaning it was her who texted the time I refused to come outside from the bathroom. "I'm foolish sometimes." I thought and opened the message. "I got your message and trust me,my friend is more than fine and she nearly had my head when I told her I told a stranger my name." PS:why are you texting though?" I nearly jumped for joy at this,so immediately I dropped my bag and type a reply "Wow...is it safe to say she's more violent than you are?" PS: I wanted to know if my boys got me the wrong person. I held my phone close to me waiting for her message to enter and it did,two minutes after….I counted. "Very funny, but my friend is okay thanks for asking though." I thought of what to ask her that wouldn't portray me as a desperate person but I couldn't think of anything to text her so when Charles called to say he was ready,I just went out to meet him, putting my phone off. I'm going to think of what to say to her while in class but I couldn't help the smile that formed in my face. "Why are you smiling?" Charles asked. "Ohh...my dad sent the money." I answered without missing a beat. "That's good, just in time cos I'm hungry." Charles said but again,he was always hungry. All through my way to class I thought of the perfect way to start a conversation but my head was blank. "I'll figure it out." I concluded as the structure of our school came into view.
