Chapter 2

I stared at Jackson and walked over to him slowly. The girl beside him stepped aside without a word, and everyone in the room watched me. I knelt in front of him and leaned in to kiss him. But he stopped me. "Beg me. Say you want me." I bit my lip as muffled snickers echoed around me. He wanted me to say something so humiliating without a care in the world. I held back for a long moment, but the words wouldn't come. "See? You don't even know the basics. Stella, if you had even a fraction of her charm, I wouldn't be so sick of you." "Every time I look at you, it just kills my mood." His cruel words rang in my ears. Fighting back my tears and shame, I got to my feet and fled the room, their mocking laughter chasing me out. "Jackson, don't you think that was a bit much?" "Yeah, Stella was crying." "Jackson, that's enough. Stella's a good person. You and I both know about her brother's situation. It's not right to bully a girl like that." Behind me, the room erupted into an argument, but I didn't care. I rushed out of the villa, desperate to get as far away as possible. Out on the street, I watched the endless stream of cars. For a fleeting moment, I wished one of them would just hit me. My parents were gone anyway. But it was only a fleeting thought, because I still had Evan. At the thought of Evan, I couldn't hold back my tears any longer. I crouched down on the sidewalk and sobbed. During the three years of our marriage, countless women had drifted in and out of Jackson's life. I knew what was on his mind. He didn't love me. Because of me, the Grants had forced him to break up with his girlfriend of three years, Iris Jones. Heartbroken, Iris had married someone else. But only a year into her marriage, she was beaten to death by her abusive husband. When Jackson found out, he went mad and went after her husband's family with everything he had. In the end, under Jackson's relentless pressure, Iris's husband was sent to prison and sentenced to death. After Iris's death, Jackson changed completely. He started dating a string of girls, all of whom looked like Iris and shared her personality. Yet, he always blamed me for what happened to her. In his mind, I was the one who killed Iris.
