Chapter 3

Back home, I stared at the wedding ring on my finger. When Jackson had first slid it on, his face had been cold and indifferent. That girl was gone now, and the house was plunged into darkness. Flicking on the lights, I looked at our wedding portrait on the wall and found it utterly ridiculous. We had married to fulfill family obligations and business interests. But I knew exactly how Jackson felt. The day before our wedding, I had gone to him and said, "If you don't want this, we can call off the engagement." His expression had been icy. "Do you honestly think we can call it off now?" Before I could reply, he had slammed the door and walked out. On our wedding day, he had been nothing but impatient as he put the ring on my finger. But my mom had told me, "Stella, once you're married, you have to devote yourself to your life together. In time, he'll see your sincerity and treat you well." But Mom never told me that some people simply don't have a heart. No matter how good you are to them, they will never be moved. They can never return your love, and perhaps they don't even want it. Snapping out of my reverie, I took off the ring and placed it on the table. The door clicked open, and Jackson walked in, smelling faintly of alcohol. Seeing me, he smirked. "What? Back so soon? I thought you'd at least hold out for a day." His mockery left me completely unfazed. I was tired of living like this. I retrieved the divorce agreement and placed it on the table. "Let's get a divorce, Jackson. I'll pay back the money I owe your family. Let's just end things between us." Jackson froze for a second, then let out a soft laugh. He picked up the agreement. "What? Are you playing games with me because I didn't give you any money?" I shrugged, totally indifferent. To him, I was nothing but a manipulative, shameless woman anyway. "Think whatever you want. I've already signed it. All you have to do is sign." Ignoring his expression, I packed my things and turned to leave. There wasn't much to pack—just a few clothes. I didn't touch anything else. I wouldn't take what wasn't mine. As I walked out the door, Jackson's voice rang out, icy and sharp. "Stella, don't you dare regret this." I chuckled softly and slammed the door behind me without a second thought.
