When Nick rang the doorbell, Alex was expecting him. “Do you know how much it costs to get out here this time of night?” Nick brought a whirlwind of complaint and cold air over the threshold. Alex stepped aside; he wouldn’t have left Nick standing out there on the doorstep even if he’d been furious with the man. He wasn’t furious, although his feelings were definitely disagreeable. The same expectation Alex had seen earlier still shone in Nick’s eyes when he turned. A hand reached out, hovering uncertainly. Alex moved away.
