Eye touch

804 Words
The bustling courtyard had settled into the quiet lull of the afternoon, but inside the shaded study, the air was stretched taut—thin, electric, and completely breathless. Kavitha stood near the high rosewood bookshelf, a heavy leather-bound book open in her hands. She had slipped into the cool room to catch her breath, but the quiet was short-lived. The heavy wooden door closed with a soft, decisive click. Karthik stood near the entrance. He didn't lock the door, nor did he make a move toward her. He simply stood motionless, his broad frame framed by the dark doorway, his hands resting naturally at his sides. He didn't take a step forward. He didn't reach out. He didn't touch her at all. Instead, his gaze locked directly into hers—and the entire room instantly dissolved. The Tension of Distance Kavitha’s fingers froze against the crisp paper of the book. She meant to look away, to break the dangerous gravity pulling at her, but her eyes were trapped in his. Karthik’s dark eyes were intense, deep, and blazing with an unyielding hunger that felt more physical than any touch. He watched her across the ten feet of open space between them, his gaze slowly mapping the subtle rise and fall of her chest, the sudden pulse fluttering at the base of her throat right above the gold Thali chain, and finally rising back to anchor directly into her eyes. Without a single physical point of contact, the friction between them spiked to a fever pitch. "You ran away," Karthik said, his voice low, raspy, and dangerously smooth, cutting through the silence like a drawn blade. Kavitha swallowed hard, her throat dry. She held the book higher, using it as a feeble shield. "I didn't run away. I came to read." A slow, devastating smile curved the corner of Karthik’s lips, but his eyes never left hers. Not even for a fraction of a second. The unbroken connection was agonizingly intense—a silent, invisible thread stretched so tight it vibrated. "You're not reading, Kavi," he murmured, taking half a step to lean his shoulder casually against the wall, keeping his hands loosely in his pockets. "You haven't turned a single page since I walked in." The Unbroken Lock Kavitha felt her pulse hammering against her ribs. It was intoxicating. For years, she had watched him from afar, satisfied with mere glances. But looking into his eyes now—knowing that all that blazing intensity was focused entirely on her—made her knees weak. "You're staring," she whispered, her breath hitching as his gaze darkened, dropping down to her lips for a agonizing second before snapping back up to lock with her eyes. "I've earned the right to look at my wife," Karthik replied softly, his voice thick with a low, possessive warmth. He didn't move an inch closer, respecting the unspoken boundary, yet the sheer power of his focus felt like a heavy, warm weight pressing against her skin. "I can see everything you're feeling right now, Kavi. Just by looking at you." "You can't," she breathed out, defying him with her words while her eyes surrendered completely to his. "I can," Karthik countered, his dark pupils holding her captive. "I can see your heart racing. I can see the goosebumps rising on your arms. And I haven't even laid a finger on you." Kavitha gasped softly, a shiver running down her spine. He was right. The distance between them was charging the room with an unbearable, delicious heat. Every time he blinked, every subtle shift in his expression felt like a caress, a whisper, a demand. The Power of the Unspoken Karthik tilted his head slightly, his gaze softening into a look of such profound, fierce devotion that Kavitha felt tears prickle at the corners of her eyes. "I used to watch you from across crowded rooms for three years," Karthik whispered, his voice holding her anchored in place. "I memorized every look you gave me when you thought I wasn't paying attention. But this... having you look straight back at me, with no fear, no hiding..." He took a slow, deliberate breath, his chest expanding as he kept his eyes locked on hers, completely consumed. "...it’s absolute torture, Kavi. And I never want it to end." Kavitha slowly set the book down on the table beside her, her hands resting flat against the polished wood. She didn't walk toward him, and he didn't move toward her. They simply stood across the sun-dappled room, drowning in the silence, speaking a entire language made of unwavering glances, shallow breaths, and the electric truth of two souls locked in an eternal gaze.
