CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE.....

2304 Words

.I didn’t even remember when sleep finally claimed me, just that it came somewhere between the tears and the exhaustion, somewhere after I’d run out of things to think about. When I woke up, the world felt muted. Everywhere was quiet. Too quiet. That kind of silence that presses against your ears until it starts to hum. My head throbbed faintly, heavy and fogged, like I’d been buried under sleep for years instead of hours. Instinctively, I reached for my phone. My fingers trembled a little as I unlocked it, praying...... desperately, foolishly.....that maybe someone had called. Maybe they had tried calling from work while I was asleep or sent an email asking me to come back saying everything that happened yesterday was just some kind of prank. Maybe there’d be a text from my parents.
