By the time Kay got home later that evening, I had almost forgotten about the whole thing. I was sitting on the couch when he walked in, his shirt slightly wrinkled, tie loose around his neck. “Welcome, babe,” I said, getting up to greet him. He smiled faintly, wrapped his arms around me for a brief second, but before I could even feel the warmth of his touch, Ava appeared. She looked devastated. Eyes red, voice trembling, tissue in hand. She played the part perfectly, like she’d practiced in front of a mirror. “Still no luck?” Kay asked, genuine concern coloring his tone. She shook her head, sniffling. “It’s gone, Kay.
