Chapter 5: Two Months in a Cage of Fur

388 Words
Two months had passed by. Adam had lost track of the days at some point. What had started as a nightmare had gradually become his reality. He had adjusted against his will to the routines of a pet. Every morning, he was greeted by Rina’s bright smile as she scratched behind his ears. He was force-fed tuna, despite his pride, and spent his afternoons lounging on the windowsill while she worked. At night, he would sit beside her while she read a book or watched TV. And, much to his dismay, he had grown used to it. The part that frustrated him the most? He liked being near her. He was starting to care. That was dangerous. Despite the comfort of Rina’s small home, Adam’s true self hadn’t changed. He was still a billionaire, still a man of power not a pet. And every day, the frustration of his powerlessness grew stronger. His company was still out there, running without him. Were his employees betraying him? Had his rivals taken advantage of his absence? He had no way of knowing. Sometimes, he would sit on the windowsill and stare at the city skyline in the distance, remembering what it felt like to own that world. Now, he was trapped in a world of soft cushions and gentle hands. A prison disguised as comfort. And worst of all… Rina was making it hard to hate it. One evening, as the rain drummed against the windows, Adam found himself curled up beside Rina on the couch. She was wrapped in a thick blanket, reading a book while absentmindedly running her fingers through his fur. He should have pulled away. But her warmth was addicting. "You know, Ivory," she murmured, "sometimes I feel like you understand me." Adam froze. She smiled softly, gazing down at him. "It’s silly, right? But… ever since I found you, I haven’t felt so alone anymore." Alone? He had never really thought about Rina’s life before. He was too wrapped up in his own problems. But now that he thought about it… She didn’t have visitors. No friends came over. No family called. Was she lonely? Something in his chest ached at the thought. "I guess we saved each other, huh?" she whispered. Adam swallowed hard. He wasn’t supposed to care. But, damn it… He did.
