"Ow—!" Whether out of shock or because she had crouched for too long, Lanyou’s attempt to stand resulted in her collapsing right back onto the floor.
"Haha—my dear little baby, are you alright?" Seeing her disheveled state, Han Yuming couldn't suppress a laugh as he reached out a hand to help her up.
"Hmph—Yun’er, come help me!" Lanyou ignored his hand. She couldn't let go of the jacket wrapped around her, so she called out to Di Yun’er, who was standing a short distance away.
"Oh, Xiao You! Are you okay?" Yun’er hurried over to help her up, her voice laced with worry.
"I’m fine. What about you? Did the glass from that bottle hurt you? You really shouldn't have done that; it was so dangerous!" Lanyou looked Yun’er up and down, terrified that her friend might be hiding an injury.
"Don't worry, I’m too quick for them to catch!" Yun’er gave a playful smile, trying to ease Lanyou’s mind.
"But what about your brother and the others?" Lanyou looked toward the ongoing scuffle, her eyes full of concern.
"Relax. I’ve already called the police; they’ll be here in a minute. Besides, now that their boss is in that state, they won't be stupid enough to keep fighting." Han Yuming spoke up, feeling a twinge of annoyance. This woman, he thought, she’s a mess herself, and yet she has the energy to worry about other men.
Lanyou finally processed his words and turned to see the sleazy man lying spread-eagle on the ground, apparently unconscious. Even so, she instinctively moved a few steps closer to Han Yuming to keep her distance from the man.
"Hmph! You dare bully my best friend? Take that, you creep! Scumbag!" Yun’er, still fuming, delivered a few extra kicks to the unconscious man.
As expected, when the lackeys saw their boss was out cold, they began to scatter and flee. Just then, the piercing sound of sirens echoed from outside, and a squad of police officers swarmed into the bar.
Han Yuming walked over to the lead officer. They spoke privately for a moment, and soon the police were busy making arrests and taking statements—yet notably, they didn't touch a single one of Xue Tao's men.
"Mr. Xue, acting out of bravery is a good thing, but it’s better to call us first. After all, this is our job," the police captain said to Xue Tao with a polite smile.
"Thank you, Officer Chen. I’ll keep that in mind for next time!" Xue Tao replied smoothly. As someone who operated in the "gray area" of the city, he knew the importance of maintaining mutual respect with the law.
"CEO Han, things are mostly settled here. We’ll be taking our leave. If you need anything in the future, just let us know." The captain's tone toward Han Yuming was significantly more deferential.
"Thank you." Han Yuming shook hands with Officer Chen, and the police team moved out.
Tensions Arise
"Xiao You, are you hurt anywhere?" Di Jun’er approached, his eyes filled with heartache. His hair was a mess, his face was bruised, and a trace of blood lingered at the corner of his mouth. He didn't care about himself; when he had seen the man grab Lanyou earlier, he was desperate to reach her but had been pinned down. Heaven knew how much his heart had ached in that moment—it was that very distraction that had allowed someone to land a punch on his face.
"I’m okay, really. See? I’m standing right here in front of you, perfectly fine," Lanyou said, her face clouded with worry. She reached out a hand to gently wipe the blood from the corner of his mouth.
Seeing this intimate gesture, and recalling the scene of them embracing in the booth earlier, Han Yuming felt a sharp pang of irritation.
"Alright, enough. It’s been a long night and you must be tired. I’m taking you home." Seeing that Lanyou showed no sign of letting go of Di Jun, he reached out and grabbed her wrist to pull her away.
"Hiss—!" Lanyou winced. A faint, circular bruise had already formed where the sleazy man had gripped her wrist.
"What happened?"
"What's wrong?"
The two men spoke in unison. The difference was clear: one voice was filled with tender pain, the other with demanding confusion.
Seeing the tension, Di Yun’er and Xue Tao quietly slipped away. They knew that when it came to matters of the heart, it was best for the people involved to handle it themselves. Although Yun’er had hoped Lanyou might become her sister-in-law, she also wanted her best friend to find true happiness—especially since Lanyou had waited sixteen years for this man.
