“Grab a partner everyone. We’ll start with blocking maneuvers.” Everyone scampers to get a partner and I see Sarah pull Victoria to her corner. The training begins, and I move through the pairs, correcting form with a touch to an elbow here, an adjustment of stance there but when I reach Victoria and Sarah, I notice immediately that something’s wrong. Sarah demonstrates a block, her movements clean and precise, but Victoria barely moves. Her attempt at mimicking the motion is lazy and halfhearted. Her arms lifted only partway before dropping back down. “Victoria,” I say, keeping my voice firm but not unkind. “You need to actually perform the moves.
