“Grab a partner everyone. We’ll start with blocking maneuvers.”
Everyone scampers to get a partner and I see Sarah pull Victoria to her corner.
The training begins, and I move through the pairs, correcting form with a touch to an elbow here, an adjustment of stance there but when I reach Victoria and Sarah, I notice immediately that something’s wrong.
Sarah demonstrates a block, her movements clean and precise, but Victoria barely moves. Her attempt at mimicking the motion is lazy and halfhearted. Her arms lifted only partway before dropping back down.
“Victoria,” I say, keeping my voice firm but not unkind. “You need to actually perform the moves. Do it again.”
“But I’ve been performing them,” she rolls her eyes at me, her tone clipped as if my interference irritates her.
