Chapter 5 : The Tower That Should Not Open

1751 Words
The Tower of Dawn should not have opened. Not for three hundred years, no one had made it open. Not the High Priestess. Not the Pope of Light. Not the ten Saints before him. But it opened for Ray. The High Priestess stopped at the edge of the floating island. The tower in front of them was not made of marble like the others. It was made of something that looked like frozen sunlight. It had no doors. No windows. Just a smooth, golden wall that reflected the sky. And in the middle of that wall, a single thorn-shaped keyhole, black and pulsing, as if it had been stabbed into the light and left to bleed. "Only the true Saint can open it," the High Priestess whispered. Her voice was shaking with excitement. "The prophecy says inside is the first scripture of Light. The word of God himself. Go, child. Touch it." She pushed him gently forward. Her light was pushing his back. Rayon looked at the keyhole. His right hand, inside his pocket, was burning so hot he thought the glove would melt. The Crown of Thorns under his skin was not screaming anymore. It was laughing. A low, hungry laugh. 'Finally,' a voice that was not his whispered in his head. It was Nocturne, the spirit of the crown. 'That is not a lock of light. That is a lock made to keep us out. Put me in.' Rayon took a deep breath. He pretended his left hand was shaking. He slowly took his right gloved hand out of his pocket. The glove was smoking for real now, thin black smoke only he could see. He pressed his gloved right palm against the golden wall. For a second, nothing happened. Then the High Priestess gasped. Black thorns exploded from his glove. Not figuratively. Literally. Dozens of sharp, black, rose-like thorns tore through the leather and stabbed into the golden wall of the tower. The wall, which was supposed to be pure holy light, screamed. A high-pitched sound like breaking glass. The golden light turned black where the thorns touched it. The black spread like ink in water, fast, hungry, covering the whole tower in a second. The beautiful Tower of Dawn turned into a Tower of Dusk. BOOM. The entire academy shook. The giant heart in the courtyard, Eren's heart, beat so hard all the bridges of light cracked. The floating islands stopped spinning. The black thorn keyhole glowed and then, with a click that echoed across the sky, the tower opened. Not a door. The wall itself melted into shadows and formed an archway. Inside was pure darkness. Not an empty dark. A living dark that breathed. "The... the prophecy didn't say it would turn black," the High Priestess whispered, her pure white eyes wide. For the first time in fifty years, she felt fear. The light in her hands flickered. Rayon turned to her. He had taken off his destroyed glove. His right hand was bare for the first time in twelve years. It was not a hand anymore. It was a beautiful, terrible thing made of interwoven black thorns, black roots, and tiny white stars trapped inside the thorns like prisoners. The Crown of Thorns had taken its true form. It went from his fingertips up to his elbow, pulsing with the same rhythm as the giant heart in the courtyard. "Prophecies lie," Ray said. His voice was no longer small. It was layered, as if two people were speaking at once - a boy and something ancient. "Especially when they are written by the people who murdered your family." The High Priestess raised her hand, light gathering to strike him. "Heretic! I knew it! The Ashen Village was cursed!" She fired a beam of pure holy light, hot enough to melt stone, right at his chest. Rayon did not dodge. He opened his right hand. The beam hit his palm of thorns and stopped. It did not burn him. The thorns drank it. The white light turned black inside his hand and vanished. His crown grew a little brighter. A little hungrier. "What are you?" she whispered. "I am what you tried to burn," Rayon said. He walked past her and into the tower. The shadows closed behind him like a mouth, leaving the High Priestess outside, screaming for the Holy Knights. Inside the Tower of Dawn, there was no floor. He was floating in an endless space full of broken memories. He saw them all at once. He saw Eren of Thorns, his great-grandfather, a tall man with the same black hair and starry thorns, kneeling in chains while Holy Knights cut his chest open with a light saw. Eren was not screaming. He was smiling at a small woman hiding in the corner - Lyra, his wife, holding a baby. Eren's heart, still beating, was ripped out and put into a crystal box. "Remember," Eren mouthed to the baby, even as he died. "Remember who took it." He saw Lyra, the Star Seer, running through a burning forest with that same baby wrapped in black cloth. She was crying, placing the baby on the doorstep of a kind woman named Elara in a small, poor village called Ashen Hollow. "Please," Lyra begged Elara, who had just lost her own child. "His name is Rayon. Hide his right hand. Hide him from the light." He saw his childhood. His mother Elara, truly loving him. The village boys throwing rocks. Father Joren watching him with greedy eyes. The night they burned Ashen Hollow because a traveling Inquisitor had finally detected a 100% Purity Noir bloodline. He saw his mother being pierced by a light spear while trying to shield him. He saw himself at seven, his right arm exploding with thorns for the first time, killing three knights by accident, then fainting. And then he saw the center of the tower. Floating in the middle of the dark was not a scripture of Light. It was a coffin made of light chains. And inside the coffin, floating, was a man. He looked exactly like Rayon, but older, perhaps thirty, with long hair made of liquid darkness and eyes that were black with two white stars inside them. He wore a coat made of condensed night. It was Caelum Noir, the First Sovereign, the man the Church called The Original Sin. "You are slow, heir," Caelum said, opening his eyes. His voice was the voice from the pit, from his blood. "I have been waiting in this prison for three hundred years." "You... you are in the Tower?" Rayon floated closer, his own thorns resonating with Caelum's coat. "This tower was my home. Solaris, the first Pope of Light, turned it into my jail after he killed Eren and sealed my soul in here as a warning. The Church tells everyone the Tower of Dawn holds God's word. In truth, it holds the one word they fear - balance." Caelum waved his hand and the light chains shattered. They could not hold him when a pure Noir was so close. He stepped out of the coffin and landed in front of Rayon. He was tall and sad. "You have taken the first inheritance in the pit. You learned Shadow Step and Umbral Grasp. Now you are inside the second Sanctuary. It is time for the second inheritance. The one that will let you take back what is yours." He placed his hand, which was also made of thorns but more elegant, more ancient, on Rayon's forehead. "Are you ready to carry the weight of every Noir who was burned, hanged, and cut open? Are you ready to stop being Ray of Ashen Hollow, the victim Saint, and become Rayon Noir, the Umbral Sovereign?" Rayon thought of his mother's burned hands. Of Eren's beating heart used as a battery outside. Of the High Priestess calling him Saint while his people were ash in their flags. His fear burned away and only cold resolve was left. "I am ready," he said. "Make them fear the name they cursed." Caelum grinned, proud and fierce. "Good. Then take my heart." He plunged his hand into his own chest, made of shadows, and pulled out a small, beating black star. It was not blood. It was pure, condensed shadow law, the core of the Sovereign. He pushed it into Rayon's chest. Pain. Not like before. This was the pain of a thousand years of memory, of every shadow user who had ever lived and died, being branded into his soul at once. Rayon screamed. In the real world, outside the tower, every shadow in Sanctum Academy screamed with him. Every student's shadow stood up on its own. Every light bridge flickered. [Second Inheritance Complete] [Bloodline: Noir - Purity 100% -> 150% (Overload - Evolution Started)] [New Title: Heir of the First Sovereign] [Skills Unlocked:] 1. Sovereign's Domain (Beginner): You can turn a 50-meter area around you into pure night where your shadows are twice as strong and light magic is half as strong. 2. Thorn Crown Manifestation (Beginner): You can summon the Crown of Thorns outside your body as armor or weapons. It feeds on light. 3. Memory of Shadows (Passive): You can touch any shadow and see what happened in that place in the last 24 hours. Outside, the High Priestess and fifty Holy Knights surrounded the now-black tower, their lights raised, chanting a sealing spell. Inside, Rayon opened his eyes. His right eye, which had been brown, was now completely black with a white star glowing inside it, just like Caelum's. His right arm's thorns had spread to his chest, forming a beautiful black crown over his heart. Caelum was fading, his soul finally free after giving away his core. "One last thing, heir. At the bottom of this tower, under the academy, is the vault. They keep Eren's heart there, powering their city. And next to it... they keep something else. Your mother. Elara. She did not die. They took her. Go." Rayon's new star-eye bled a single tear of black light. "They will pay," he whispered, and his voice made the entire Tower of Dawn shatter like glass. The tower exploded outwards in a wave of pure darkness, sending Holy Knights flying. And from the smoke, Rayon Noir walked out, his right hand bare, his crown shining, his domain already spreading across the courtyard, turning noon into night. The Saint had come home. But not for forgiveness.
