_6 Months Later_
The Okafor Beach House had lights everywhere.
White fairy lights. Candles. Flowers.
Zara stood in front of the mirror in the bedroom. The same bedroom from Chapter 13.
But this time, it was hers.
The dress was simple. Ivory. No contract. No deal. Just love.
“Mrs. Okafor,” her mom said from behind her. Healthy. Hair grown back. Eyes bright. “You’re glowing.”
Zara turned and hugged her. Hard. “Thank you. For surviving.”
Her mom kissed her forehead. “Thank him. And thank you for being brave.”
A knock.
Damian’s best man. “It’s time.”
Zara took a deep breath. Walked outside.
And there he was.
Damian.
No suit. Just white shirt, black pants, and that scar on his shoulder she knew by heart.
He was waiting at the end of a flower aisle. On the sand. With the ocean behind him.
50 people. All smiling.
Zara walked to him. Slow.
When she got there, he grabbed her hands.
“You look—” His voice cracked. “You look like mine.”
“I am,” Zara whispered.
The officiant talked. Vows. Rings.
Then: “You may kiss the bride.”
Damian didn’t do soft.
He pulled her in and kissed her like it was the alley again. Like it was the dock. Like he’d been waiting 365 days for this exact second.
Everyone cheered.
Later, dancing. Cake. Laughter.
Damian spun Zara around. “Happy?”
“The happiest,” Zara said. “Day 366 and counting.”
Damian grinned. “I like the sound of that.”
His phone buzzed.
He ignored it.
It buzzed again.
Zara nudged him. “Answer it. What if it’s important?”
Damian sighed and answered. Put it on speaker so Zara could hear.
“Sir,” a woman’s voice. Shaky. Scared. “My name is Amaka. I got your number from the news. I... I think I’m Day 90.”
Silence.
Damian’s smile dropped. He looked at Zara.
Zara’s heart squeezed.
“Amaka,” Damian said gently. “Where are you?”
“I’m in Abuja. He said I have 20 days left. Please. Help me.”
Zara took Damian’s hand. Squeezed it.
Damian looked at his new wife. His partner.
“Pack a bag,” he told Amaka. “We’re coming.”
He hung up.
Zara raised an eyebrow. “Honeymoon’s canceled?”
Damian pulled her close. Kissed her temple. “Honeymoon’s postponed. We have work to do.”
Zara smiled. Fierce. “Good. Because I’m not just Mrs. Okafor anymore.”
“What are you?”
Zara looked out at the ocean. “I’m Subject Z. And we’re saving them all.”
Damian kissed her. Proud.
“Then let’s go, Mrs. Okafor.”
