Midnight Echoes

925 Words
The rain had stopped by midnight, leaving the sprawling grounds of the Vance estate glistening under a cold, silver moon. Inside the master suite, the digital clock on the bedside table glowed silently, reading 12:14 AM. Maya lay awake in the center of the oversized bed, staring up at the intricate plaster molding of the ceiling. Despite the physical exhaustion weighing heavily on her limbs, sleep refused to claim her. Her mind was racing a mile a minute, replaying Julian's explosive revelations about the fabricated corporate espionage charges from five years ago. Elena hadn't just been a ruthless mother-in-law pushing her out; she had been a calculated architect of ruin, tearing Maya's family apart with forged bank records and smuggled ledgers. Beside her, Alexander stirred. He hadn't bothered to change into sleepwear; he lay flat on his back with his arms crossed behind his head, his dark silhouette cutting a striking, rigid line against the sheets. He was awake, too, his sharp breathing betraying the fierce, restless energy humming beneath his calm exterior. "You're still torturing yourself over what Julian brought," Alexander murmured, his deep voice slicing cleanly through the quiet dark of the room. He didn't turn his head, but his hand slid across the mattress, his warm fingers finding hers and lacing them together with a firm, grounding pressure. "I'm not torturing myself, Alexander. I'm just... remembering," Maya whispered back, turning on her side to look at him, though his features were mostly obscured by shadow. "Five years of hiding. Five years of wondering what my father did wrong, why our firm collapsed overnight, why nobody would answer our phone calls. All because your mother wanted absolute control over the board." Alexander finally turned his head, his piercing slate-grey eyes catching the faint moonlight filtering through the window. There was a raw, aching vulnerability in his gaze that he rarely allowed the rest of the world to see—a heavy burden of guilt he had carried ever since she vanished. "And I let her do it," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper. He shifted closer, pulling her into the crook of his arm so her head rested against the solid wall of his chest, right above his thundering heartbeat. "I was so blinded by corporate politics, so focused on keeping my grandfather's legacy intact, that I didn't see the trap she was weaving around us until it was already snapped shut. By the time I found out you were gone, your apartment was empty, your bank accounts were frozen, and my mother had lawyers blocking every investigative path I tried to open." Maya listened to the quiet fury and regret vibrating in his chest. Slowly, she lifted her hand, her palm resting flat against his heart, feeling the heavy, steady rhythm that had become her anchor in this mad world. "You were just as much her victim as I was," Maya said softly, her thumb tracing the line of his collarbone. "She manipulated your trust just like she tried to manipulate mine. But tomorrow, that ends." "Tomorrow," Alexander agreed, a dark, dangerous edge returning to his voice as his arm tightened possessively around her waist, pulling her flush against his frame, "we don't just defend ourselves. We dismantle her entire foundation piece by piece. Julian's ledgers give us the exact paper trail we need to freeze her personal assets and strip her voting seats on the board before she can even file her fraudulent charges." Just as the tense comfort of the moment settled over them, a sharp, jarring sound shattered the silence. It wasn't a knock on the door, and it wasn't the intercom. It was the low, high-security private satellite phone sitting on the mahogany nightstand—the secure line that only three people in the entire world possessed the number to, one of whom was head of estate security, and the other... was currently sleeping soundly in the nursery wing down the hall. Alexander's body went completely rigid. In a fraction of a second, any trace of vulnerability vanished, replaced by the lethal, hyper-focused predator ready to strike. He reached across the bed with blinding speed, snatching the heavy satellite phone before it could ring a second time. He pressed it to his ear, his voice dropping into an arctic, dead-silent register that could freeze fire. "Report." Maya propped herself up on her elbow, her breath catching in her throat as she watched the sharp, dangerous angles of Alexander's face tighten under the dim glow of the phone screen. For a few long, agonizing seconds, Alexander didn't speak. He just listened, his slate-grey eyes widening fractionally—a rare, terrifying sign of genuine shock that made Maya's blood run cold. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking carved out of stone. "Lock down the entire estate," Alexander commanded, his voice shaking with a terrifying, suppressed fury that promised absolute destruction. "No one enters. No one leaves. Activate Protocol Zero immediately." He clicked the phone dead and slowly lowered his hand, his gaze locking onto Maya with a look of pure, unadulterated dread. "What is it?" Maya gasped, her voice trembling as panic clawed at her chest. "Alexander, what's wrong? Is it Leo?" "That was Marcus," Alexander said, his voice dangerously low as he threw off the covers and swung his legs over the side of the bed, reaching for the holster locked inside the bedside drawer. "Someone just breached the east wing nursery. Leo's nanny is unconscious, and our boy is gone."
