Selene couldn’t move.
Damian’s words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.
“Tell me the truth… or I’ll find out myself.”
Her heart pounded violently against her ribs.
He wasn’t bluffing.
That was the problem.
Damian never made empty threats.
“I don’t have anything to tell you,” she said, forcing the words out evenly.
A lie.
A dangerous one.
His eyes narrowed slightly, studying her like she was a puzzle he was already close to solving.
“You’ve always been bad at this,” he murmured.
“At what?”
“Pretending.”
Her fingers curled slightly at her sides. “Then maybe you’re seeing what you want to see.”
He took a slow step closer.
“And what do I want to see, Selene?”
Her breath hitched.
Control.
She needed control.
“You tell me,” she said, holding his gaze.
A faint smirk touched his lips, but there was nothing amused about it.
“Answers.”
The word settled between them like a warning.
Selene swallowed.
“You won’t get them.”
Another step.
Closer.
Always closer.
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
Her back nearly met the wall again, the familiar trap closing in around her.
She hated how easily he did this how effortlessly he cornered her, not just physically but mentally.
“You don’t get to interrogate me,” she said.
“And you don’t get to walk back into my life full of secrets.”
The sharpness in his voice cut deeper than before.
“This isn’t your life,” she snapped.
“Then why are you in it?”
The question hit harder than she expected.
Because she didn’t have a safe answer.
Because the truth would destroy everything.
Her silence stretched too long.
And Damian noticed.
Of course he did.
“There it is,” he said quietly.
Her stomach twisted.
“What?”
“That hesitation.”
His gaze dropped briefly again.
Lower.
Focused.
Her entire body tensed.
No.
Don’t react.
Don’t give him anything.
But it was already too late.
Because now
He was watching more carefully.
More deliberately.
“You’ve changed,” he said again, softer this time.
Selene shook her head. “People change.”
“Not like this.”
His voice had lost some of its edge.
Not softer.
But… deeper.
More observant.
“You’re hiding something that matters,” he continued.
“And it’s not just about you.”
Her heart nearly stopped.
How is he getting this close?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You do.”
His tone hardened again.
“I can see it.”
He stepped even closer, his presence overwhelming.
“You flinch when I get too close.”
Her breath caught.
“You’re careful with how you move.”
Her pulse raced.
“You keep touching your stomach like you’re protecting something.”
Her world tilted.
No.
No, no, no.
He noticed.
He noticed everything.
“Stop,” she said quickly.
Too quickly.
Too late.
Because now
His eyes darkened completely.
There was no doubt left in them now.
Only focus.
Sharp, dangerous focus.
“Why?” he asked quietly.
Selene’s throat tightened.
“Because you’re imagining things.”
“I don’t imagine,” he said.
The certainty in his voice sent a chill down her spine.
“I observe.”
Her chest rose and fell unevenly.
“You’re wrong.”
“Am I?”
Another step.
Now there was no space left between them.
His hand lifted slightly again.
Slow.
Careful.
Like he didn’t want to scare her.
But also like he wasn’t going to stop.
Selene’s heart pounded wildly.
If he touched her
If he felt
Everything would fall apart.
“Damian, don’t”
But he didn’t listen.
His hand moved toward her waist again.
Closer.
Closer
She caught his wrist.
Her grip wasn’t strong.
But it was desperate.
“Don’t touch me.”
The words came out sharper than she intended.
The reaction was immediate.
Damian went still.
Completely still.
And then
Slowly
His gaze lifted to hers.
And what she saw in his eyes made her stomach drop.
That was it.
That was the moment.
The moment suspicion turned into something real.
“You’re scared,” he said quietly.
Her breath hitched.
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Of me?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Selene couldn’t answer.
Because the truth was sitting right there between them.
Alive.
Growing.
Impossible to hide forever.
And Damian
He could feel it now.
Not fully.
But enough.
Enough to know this wasn’t just fear.
This was something bigger.
Something real.
Something connected to him.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“Selene…”
Her heart pounded harder.
“Yes?”
A pause.
Long.
Tense.
Then
His voice dropped into something darker.
More certain.
More dangerous than before.
“…is there a reason you don’t want me touching you?”
