THE NOBODY I FELL FOR Chapter Nine — Maddison’s POV The moment Blake's car disappeared around the corner, I closed the front door and leaned against it for a second. I smiled to myself. Today had been nice. Simple. No drama. No arguments. Just Blake and me sitting beneath the tree, talking about everything and nothing. I walked toward the kitchen, still thinking about him, when the doorbell suddenly rang. I frowned. Who could that be? Mum wasn't supposed to be home yet. I walked back toward the front door and opened it. A delivery man stood on the porch holding a large bouquet of flowers. I blinked. "Hi. Maddison?" "Yes?" "These are for you." I stared at the flowers. They were beautiful. A mixture of soft pink and white blooms, wrapped carefully in elegant paper with a small ribbon around the stems. My eyes immediately went to the little box tucked underneath them. Chocolate. My favorite chocolate. A smile slowly appeared on my face. There was only one person who knew exactly which chocolate I liked. "Thank you," I said, taking everything from him. He nodded before walking back toward his vehicle. I closed the door and looked down at the flowers again. There was a small card attached to the bouquet. I pulled it free and opened it. For my favorite girl. I hope this makes you smile. — Usher I couldn't help it. I smiled. Usher always knew how to make an entrance. I carried everything into the living room and carefully placed the flowers in a vase on the table. Their sweet scent quickly filled the room, making the entire space feel brighter. I picked up the chocolate. My favorite. I laughed quietly. "Of course." I reached for my phone and found his number. The call connected after a few rings. "Hello?" His voice immediately made me smile. "You sent me flowers?" There was amusement in his voice. "Did you get them?" "Obviously." "And the chocolate?" I looked down at the box. "How did you remember?" "I remember everything about you." I rolled my eyes, although he couldn't see me. "You're so full of yourself." "Maybe." I laughed. "Thank you, though. They're beautiful." "I'm glad you like them." I ran my fingers gently over one of the petals. "I really do." There was a short silence. Then he asked, "What are you doing tonight?" I paused. My smile faded slightly. Tonight. I knew exactly why he was asking. "I don't know yet." "You could come see me." I looked at the flowers again. For a moment, I didn't answer. My mind drifted back to Blake. His smile. His voice. The way he'd looked genuinely happy when he told me about his new job. I swallowed. "I'll let you know." Usher was quiet for a second. "Okay." We said goodbye, and I ended the call. I placed my phone on the table beside the flowers. The room suddenly felt much quieter. I looked at the bouquet again. They were beautiful. The chocolate was thoughtful. The gesture was sweet. Yet somehow, my mind was still somewhere else. With Blake. And that was becoming a problem I couldn't ignore forever.
