When Karla declared that she knew who Malia was now, I thought she had a specific name or face, but it turned out it was the spirit she recognized, and until she came face-to-face with the body that was now the new Malia, there was nothing she could do about it.
The original plan was that Arnaud was free to go, but after she made that declaration, he voluntarily decided that he would stay until all this was resolved.
