Chloe’s pulse stuttered as she stared at the photograph, the air thinning around her. Her father’s familiar grin, kind, confident, proud beamed from the glossy paper, his arm draped casually around a younger Brandon Blake. It was impossible, yet undeniable. The frame trembled between her fingers.
“You knew my father,” she said finally, voice breaking the silence.
Brandon didn’t move from behind his desk. “I worked for him before I built the company. He was one of the few people who believed I could do it.”
Her breath hitched. “Believed? Past tense?”
He hesitated, and that pause felt like a knife sliding between her ribs.
“What are you not telling me?”
Brandon exhaled slowly and turned toward the window, his reflection fractured by rain. “Your father died in a car crash fifteen years ago. You know that. What you don’t know is that he was driving back from a meeting with my father that night.”
Chloe’s hand flew to her chest. “Your father?”
He nodded once. “He wanted to buy out the small tech firm your father was running. A takeover. Aggressive. My father didn’t take no for an answer.”
“So what?” she said sharply. “You think my father’s death was a business casualty?”
Brandon’s jaw clenched. “I think it wasn’t an accident.”
For a second, she couldn’t speak. The storm outside grew louder, swallowing the city in thunder. “You’re saying your family had something to do with my father’s death?”
“I’m saying someone covered up something that night,” Brandon replied, his voice low. “And I’ve been trying to untangle it ever since.”
Her stomach twisted. “And you think that connects to the leak? To me?”
He turned to face her, and for once there was no corporate mask, no CEO composure, just a man who looked haunted. “I think Tyler found out about your father. I think he used it to plant evidence and set you up. Because if the truth about that night came out, it would destroy the Blake legacy and me with it.”
Chloe’s throat burned. “You had all this, and you let me burn for it?”
“I couldn’t risk alerting him,” Brandon said. “He’s been watching everything I do.”
She shook her head, fury and disbelief colliding in her chest. “You played God with my life.”
“I was trying to keep you alive,” he said, stepping closer. “If Tyler suspected I cared about you”
“Cared?” she snapped, her laugh sharp and cracked. “You don’t even know me.”
Something flickered in his eyes, regret, maybe, or guilt too deep to name. “I know I shouldn’t have let it get this far.”
“Too late for that,” she said.
Chloe turned toward the door, but Brandon caught her wrist not forcefully, just enough to stop her. The contact jolted through her like static.
“Chloe, listen”
“Don’t touch me,” she said, voice trembling.
He released her instantly, his expression unreadable. “If you walk out now, Tyler wins. He’ll leak more. You’ll never work again.”
She glared at him, tears burning behind her eyes. “You think I care about my career after this?”
“You should,” he said quietly. “Because it’s not just your name at stake anymore.”
She frowned. “What do you mean?”
Brandon turned his screen toward her again. A headline blazed across it “Former Executive’s Daughter in Scandal Tied to Fatal Corporate Cover-Up.” Beneath it was a photo of her father, side by side with her. The article timestamp showed it had gone live twenty minutes ago.
Her breath caught. “This just posted?”
“Yes,” Brandon said. “Tyler moved faster than I expected.”
Chloe’s mind raced. “He’s using the past to bury me all over again.”
“Not just you,” Brandon said. “Me too. He’s positioning himself as the victim, the heir cleaning up my mess.”
Chloe’s pulse thundered in her ears. “Then what do we do?”
He studied her face, his voice steady but low. “We make him believe it’s true. That you and I were working together all along.”
Her mouth parted. “You mean?”
“A fake partnership,” he said. “You play the woman who betrayed me, then returned to fix what she broke. We’ll give the press a story they can’t resist: redemption, guilt, reconciliation.”
She stared at him, stunned. “You’re out of your mind.”
“It’s the only way to smoke him out,” Brandon replied. “He’ll think we’re trying to control the narrative. He won’t be able to resist making a move.”
She took a shaky step back. “You’re asking me to stand beside the man who ruined me. To pretend I”
He cut her off gently. “To clear your name.”
Their eyes locked an unspoken storm between them.
For a long moment, neither of them moved. Then Chloe looked down at the photo still trembling in her hand. Her father’s smile felt like a ghost urging her forward not for vengeance, but for truth.
She looked up again, her voice quiet but certain. “If I do this, I do it on my terms. No more lies.”
Brandon’s expression softened, something almost like respect flashing there. “Agreed.”
“Good,” she said, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Then start by telling me everything you’ve been hiding.”
Brandon opened his mouth to respond but before he could, the office door burst open.
Noah, his assistant, stumbled in, pale and breathless. “SirTyler just called an emergency press conference. He’s accusing you both of corporate espionage.”
The words hung in the air like the strike of a match.
Chloe’s heart plummeted. Brandon’s face hardened, all emotion replaced by steely resolve.
“Then it begins,” he said.
And as thunder cracked above the city, Chloe realized she had just stepped into a war that could destroy them both.
