EPISODE TWO : THE AFTERMATH

1125 Words
The afternoon light slanted through the blinds of Chloe’s apartment, painting the room in stripes of gold and gray. The air smelled faintly of burnt coffee and panic. Boxes she’d brought home from her office sat like silent witnesses on the dining table. Every object inside her notebooks, pens, even the small framed photo of her father felt like relics from a life she no longer owned. Grace sat on the couch, scrolling through her phone with the kind of face people made when reading bad news they couldn’t stop reading. “They’ve made it official,” she said. “The company released a statement. ‘Ms. Chloe Morgan has resigned following her admission of responsibility in the data breach.’” She looked up, guilt written all over her. “You didn’t admit anything, right?” Chloe forced a laugh that came out brittle. “Apparently I did. I guess lying is a corporate skill I never learned.” Her cat, Luna, leapt onto the table, sniffing around the open boxes. Chloe reached out, absently running a hand over the soft fur. It was grounding something warm and alive when everything else felt cold. Grace set her phone down. “You should lawyer up. Or at least make a public statement” “To who?” Chloe interrupted. “Half of New York already believes I slept with Brandon to climb up the ladder and sold him out when I was done. The other half is too busy refreshing gossip blogs to care.” She turned toward the window, where the city stretched endlessly beneath the evening haze. “I’ve spent years trying to make a name that wasn’t my father’s. Now I’m a headline.” Grace hesitated. “He’s a powerful man, Chloe. Maybe it’s better to stay quiet until” “Until what?” Chloe spun, frustration bubbling to the surface. “Until I fade into another ruined career story? No. I didn’t do this.” She walked toward the small bar cart in the corner, pouring herself a splash of wine. Her reflection in the glass cabinet looked like someone else's entirely eyes rimmed red, hair falling from the bun she’d tied that morning. The strong, composed Chloe who’d faced boardrooms full of men and won arguments with a smile she was gone. Grace’s voice softened. “You think someone framed you.” “I know someone did.” Chloe set down the glass, her hand trembling just enough for the wine to ripple. “Those files were encrypted. Only Brandon and I had access. He knows that.” Her throat tightened. “He looked at me like I’d broken something that mattered.” Grace watched her carefully. “Maybe he did it to protect the company. Maybe he had no choice.” “Brandon Blake always has a choice,” Chloe said quietly. “And he chose to let the world believe I’m guilty.” A knock sounded at the door. Both women froze. Grace’s expression shifted to alarm. “You’re not expecting anyone?” Chloe shook her head. She approached the door cautiously, peering through the peephole. A man in a dark suit stood in the hallway, his expression unreadable. He held an envelope embossed with the **Blake Industries** seal. She opened the door halfway. “What is it?” “Ms. Morgan,” he said formally. “Mr. Blake asked me to deliver this to you personally.” Chloe stared at him. “He couldn’t send an email?” The man didn’t answer, just handed over the envelope and turned away. The sound of his footsteps faded down the hall. Grace hovered near the couch, whispering, “What do you think it is?” Chloe tore open the envelope. Inside was a single sheet of paper with a typed paragraph and Brandon Blake’s signature at the bottom. > *Ms. Morgan, effective immediately, you are prohibited from discussing company matters publicly or privately. Any breach will result in legal action. Consider this a professional courtesy.* A business threat disguised as politeness. Classic Brandon. Grace read over her shoulder. “He’s gagging you.” Chloe folded the letter, hands shaking. “He’s protecting himself.” The silence between them thickened. Outside, a siren wailed somewhere in the city, fading as quickly as it came. Chloe looked back at the boxes, at her father’s photo now slightly askew. “You once told me to pick battles that matter,” she murmured. “Well, Dad, this one does.” Grace’s phone buzzed again. She frowned, reading the screen. “You’re not going to like this.” “What now?” “They’re saying you were the anonymous source for that investigative article about corporate corruption two years ago. Someone leaked old messages. They’re making you look like some kind of serial whistleblower.” Chloe blinked, stunned. “That’s impossible. I didn’t even know that journalist.” Grace turned the screen toward her. The article headline blared: *Ex-Director Chloe Morgan linked to previous corporate leak investigation.* “Someone’s rewriting history,” Chloe said, voice low. Grace’s face had gone pale. “Who would go this far?” Chloe didn’t answer. Her mind flashed to the conference roomTyler’s smirk, his casual cruelty, the satisfaction in his eyes when she’d fallen silent. Maybe Brandon wasn’t her enemy after all. Maybe he was just another pawn. She moved to her desk, pulling out a laptop from one of the boxes. “I’m going to trace the files from that leak,” she said, her tone sharp again. “Someone used my credentials. I’ll find out who.” Grace placed a hesitant hand on her arm. “And if it leads back to him?” Chloe met her gaze. “Then he’ll know what it feels like to be ruined.” A shadow of something fierce passed over her features a flicker of anger and pain, too intertwined to separate. The doorbell rang again. Louder this time. Grace whispered, “Do you think it’s him?” Chloe’s heart jumped. “Brandon Blake doesn’t knock. He sends lawyers.” Still, she opened the door. A man stood there, tall, sandy-haired, wearing a dark coat. He wasn’t Brandon. It was **Noah Grant**Brandon's personal assistant. He offered a brief nod, his tone courteous but cautious. “Ms. Morgan, Mr. Blake asked me to deliver another message. This one’s verbal.” Chloe’s stomach dropped. “Go ahead.” Noah’s eyes flickered, almost apologetic. “He says, and I quote, ‘You’ll regret what you’ve done.’” For a moment, the world tilted. Grace gasped behind her, but Chloe barely heard. She felt the sting of humiliation sharpen into something colderresolve. She straightened, voice steady. “Tell Mr. Blake I already do.”
