CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT The ride back to the Tiber was swift yet cautious. Even at this hour of the night the roads leading to Rome were filled with wheeled traffic and groups of artisans and laborers on foot. It was a simple matter of slipping out of a clump of trees and inserting themselves into the traffic flow. Hardly anyone noticed nor cared when two men in uniform slipped into the stream.
