CHAPTER TWELVE The eloquent Gnaeus greeted them at the door to the apartments in the military barracks. Even before Decimus and Quintus Flavius could enter the room the mute's hands were flying furiously before him as he gave his report to the tribune. Walking across the wide room, the tribune poured wine for he and his young centurion but kept close attention on the small servant's hands. Frowning, he handed Quintus his wine and then drank from his own. Quintus, for his part, watched Gnaeus closely.
