CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Rufus returned forty-eight hours later with news he had found the viper's nest which hid Caius Septimus from the world. Just outside Rome, a mile off the road leading to Ostia, the sea captain and three other men found a large farmhouse to spend the night in. The farm had an extensive set of buildings, all made of stone and large enough to house a dozen people or more. Surrounding the farmyard was a low stone wall of unusual thickness. The house and its surrounding buildings sat on a hill overlooking the road, with the ground between the road and the farmhouse cleared for tilling and thus offering very little cover for anyone who wished to approach without being seen.
