THIRTY-SIX DCI Grace Swan was furious as she strode into the MIR for that morning’s briefing. She held the ‘Gazette’ tight her right hand, so tight that her knuckles gleamed white. Her nose flared with anger as she glared at the assembled detectives. ‘Who the f**k has been talking to the papers?’ she demanded angrily, her raised voice harsh and shrill, ‘Who’s been talking to this f*****g rag?’ she demanded again, waving the paper in her hand like a cudgel, as if to batter the culprit to death with it. Grace really swore in public, hardly ever in front of colleagues and it was a sure sign of her fierce anger that she did so now.
