NINETY-FOUR Canteen Friday was the day every prisoner looks forward to. Canteen Friday, the day when the small treats they have been able to buy with their meagre earnings or money sent in by relatives and friends are delivered to their cells in large plastic bags. Chocolate bars, crisps, biscuits, packets of sweets, cupcakes. bottles of shampoo, vapes, all manner of similar goods can be ordered from the canteen. Many inmates use them for barter rather than eat or smoke them themselves, bartering them for other, less readily available goods, goods definitely not available from the canteen. Chocolate bars, sweets and vapes were often ‘lent’ out to those with no money to pay, such debts to be collected on Canteen Friday Friday is the day when debts are called in and violence will follow
