Chapter 4
The dawn bled red across the academy skies.
Storm clouds loomed above the towers like watchful predators, silent, heavy, waiting.
The Trial of Fire.
A rite of passage for every student.
Live combat. No weapons. No rules.
Only strength. Only survival.
For most, it was a test.
For Elira, it was a sentence.
She stood at the edge of the stone coliseum, breathing shallow.
Above, the bleachers teemed with students. They howled, shouted, jeered. The arena’s ancient walls trembled with their noise.
And high above them all, in the instructor’s box, Kael stood with his arms crossed, his jaw rigid.
He hadn’t wanted this.
He’d argued. He’d begged.
“She’s not ready,” he told Headmistress Vaelyn the night before.
“She’s not weak,” came her cold reply. “And she won’t be coddled just because fate made her yours.”
The warning was clear:
Protect her too openly and you’ll lose everything.
But Elira hadn’t come defenseless.
The night before, she’d slipped into the forest, past borders, past watchtowers, into the ruins of the forgotten wolf temple.
There, she found him.
An old man, scarred, blind in one eye. Yet the power radiating from him was ancient.
“Name?” he asked without looking at her.
She wrote it on bark.
“Elira,” he read aloud. “The mute healer." The marked girl.”
He rose slowly and faced her.
“You won’t speak with your mouth? Fine. Let your body speak instead.”
And under the silver moon, she trained.
Silent.
Focused.
Unyielding.
Now, she stood in the arena’s center.
Across from her?
Sienna.
Of course.
Sienna had volunteered before the Headmistress even called for challengers.
The crowd was electric.
“Let’s see what the glow girl can do!”
“Make her bleed, Sienna!”
Sienna stepped forward, draped in warrior white, her golden eyes gleaming.
“Try not to faint this time,” she whispered with a cruel smile.
Elira didn’t blink.
Didn’t flinch.
She stood still like a wolf before the strike.
The horn blew.
Sienna lunged fast, claws extended.
Elira ducked, pivoted, rolled beneath her legs, and kicked hard.
Sienna stumbled.
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Kael leaned forward in his box, tension etched in every muscle.
Sienna growled and shifted half-form. Her claws gleamed.
She attacked again.
Elira didn’t back down.
She waited. Counted. Moved.
“You don’t need to be stronger,” the temple warrior had told her. “You just need to be smarter.”
Elira twisted, dodged, countered.
Her silence wasn’t a weakness anymore, it was control.
The rhythm of the fight shifted.
And then
Sienna caught her by the arm and slammed her hard into the sand.
Laughter erupted. Dust flew.
Sienna leaned down to gloat.
“Still weak,” she hissed. “Still nothing.”
Wrong.
Elira’s palms lit up.
Not healing.
Power.
A blast of radiant gold surged from her hands.
It hit Sienna like a wall.
Boom.
The warrior girl flew across the arena and crashed into the far wall.
The crowd went silent.
Elira stood.
Bloodied. Glowing. Alive.
Her eyes shimmered with the silver-gold light. Her aura pulsed like a second heartbeat.
No one laughs now.
They stared.
They feared.
They believed.
She turned toward the instructor's box.
Kael stood frozen, gripping the railing, so tightly his knuckles had gone white.
His wolf was clawing at the surface.
Then a voice from the crowd rang out.
“She’s a witch!”
“She’s not one of us!”
The mood turned in a heartbeat.
Growls echoed. Fear tainted the air.
And Kael moved.
He leaped down, landed with a thunderous thud and crossed the sand in seconds.
He reached her.
She looked up at him, trembling, exhausted, still alight with power.
Their eyes locked.
Something ancient, final, and irreversible snapped into place.
Kael grabbed her arm and pulled her to him.
Not gently.
But possessively.
Claiming.
He turned to the arena.
His voice cracked through the tension like thunder.
“I dare anyone to touch her.”
Gasps. Stillness.
Students froze.
Instructors stiffened.
Sienna, sprawled in the sand, stared up with wide, humiliated eyes.
And in the silence that followed, one truth settled into every watching soul:
The voiceless girl had fire.
And the Alpha was burning for her.
The silence in the arena was deafening.
Kael stood with Elira cradled against his chest, fury pulsing through him like wildfire.
His body was rigid, every muscle taut with rage. The power rolling off him was suffocating. Protective. Possessive.
Around them, no one dared move.
Not the instructors.
Not the council agents lurking in the shadows.
Not the students are still stunned by the golden light and the Alpha’s claim.
Elira could hear his heartbeat against her ear, fierce, raw, untamed.
And for the first time since arriving at Mooncrest Academy...
She felt seen.
But deep inside, she knew:
This moment came with a cost.
That night, Kael stood before the Headmistress’s desk like a warrior facing judgment.
“You’ve compromised your position,” Headmistress Vaelyn said without looking up, her quill gliding across a scroll.
“I protected a student,” Kael growled, his voice cold.
“You claimed her,” Vaelyn snapped, eyes flashing as they finally met her. Publicly. Visibly. Emotionally, "Do you understand what that means, Kael?"
He clenched his fists.
“She’s marked,” Vaelyn said, stepping closer. That bond is no longer dormant. It’s glowing. Growing. And if her magic awakens further”
“She’ll need someone who understands it,” Kael interrupted.
“She’ll need someone who can survive it,” Vaelyn countered sharply. You have a choice. Break the bond… or step down.”
The room chilled instantly.
Kael’s mouth parted. “Step down?”
“You cannot lead and love at the same time,” she said. Not here. Not now.”
Kael looked away, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached.
He already knew his answer.
He just hadn’t said it out loud yet.
Elira sat curled on the window seat of her private chamber, the moonlight slipping through the stained-glass onto her bare wrist.
The crescent mark shimmered softly beneath her fingers.
The connection to Kael thrummed like a thread between their souls, taut, alive.
She closed her eyes.
Then came the whisper.
Faint. Ethereal. Ancient.
“Elira…”
Her eyes flew open.
No one was there.
But the mirror across the room rippled like water.
She stood slowly, legs trembling, and approached it.
Her reflection… changed.
It was still her but older. Stronger. Dressed in silver robes that shimmered like stars. Her eyes glowed like the full moon.
The voice echoed again from within the glass.
“You’ve awakened the bond too early…”
Elira stared, breath caught in her throat.
“You carry more than light. The Moonblood in your veins remembers. And the shadows will come for it.”
Then, just like that, the vision vanished.
The mirror stilled.
Elira stumbled back, her heart racing. Her knees hit the bed.
Not just bonded.
Not just marked.
Chosen.
Kael returned just before midnight.
His steps were slower. Heavier.
The moment he entered, their eyes locked.
She stood quickly.
He hesitated in the doorway as like he didn’t know if he deserved to be there.
Then his voice broke the silence.
“They gave me an ultimatum.”
Her breath hitched.
Kael stepped closer, every word pulled from the ache in his chest.
“I’m not going to reject you.”
Her heart leaped. But he wasn’t finished.
“But if I choose you… I lose everything else I’ve fought for.”
She reached out and took his hand.
The bond pulsed. The mark warmed.
He closed his eyes and let out a shaky breath.
“I’ve trained my whole life for this. To lead. To control. But when you collapsed in that arena…”
“Nothing else mattered.”
He moved closer. Slowly. Reverently.
Their foreheads touched, and the room went still.
“I’ll stay,” he whispered. “As long as you need me.”
The mate mark flared between them, soft silver light blooming in the dark.
And neither of them noticed…
The enchanted mirror across the room had shimmered again.
But this time, it didn’t show Elira.
It showed Sienna.
Watching from another room.
Smiling.
“Let the Alpha choose,” she whispered.
“It’ll make his fall so much sweeter.”
