Emberstone's Secrets And Vault Of Forgotten Light

1803 Words
Chapter 8 The ruins of Emberstone rose from the earth like broken teeth, jagged and solemn beneath the crescent moon. Shattered towers clawed at the sky, their bones blackened by time and fire. Elira stood at the edge of it all, her breath catching. Ash drifted in the wind, and the air reeked of burnt magic old, bitter, and broken. Kael scanned the desolate skyline, hand resting on the hilt of his blade. “This place...” he muttered, eyes narrowing. “It feels like a graveyard.” Elira didn’t speak. She couldn’t. The mark on her wrist was burning like a brand, pulsing in time with something hidden deep beneath the surface. A whisper in her blood. Not just Nyla… The Hollow Gate. They slipped into the city under the cover of night, weaving through crumbling alleys and moss-choked archways. Every step echoed like a memory. Kael took the lead, silent but sharp-eyed. He hadn’t said much since they left the shrine, but Elira sensed the shift in him. He still watched over her. Protected her. But now, he watched her too. When she glowed, he flinched just a flicker. When her power pulsed and reached out to others, his jaw tightened. She didn’t ask why. Not yet. Not when a young girl’s cry still echoed in her bones. They found her beneath the ruined temple curled in the crypt’s shadows, her silver light flickering like a dying star. Nyla. No older than fifteen. Frail. Wild-eyed. Elira stepped into the chamber and dropped to her knees. Their Moonbloods sparked like flint. “You’re real...” Nyla breathed, tears tracking down her soot-stained cheeks. “I thought I dreamed you.” Elira reached out slowly and took her hand. Warmth flowed between them light soothing light. Nyla’s shivering calmed. “She... my sister... she shifted, and they came. Took her. I tried to stay hidden.” Elira didn’t speak. She didn’t need to. Her aura wrapped around the girl like a promise. Kael lingered at the door, eyes unreadable. His wolf stirred inside him, protective but restless. And when he looked at Elira, he didn’t just see power. He saw something slipping from his grasp. That night, they sheltered in the temple’s lowest chamber, once used by ancient Moonblood priests. Stone walls held the echoes of forgotten rituals. The air was still, but heavy. Kael kept watch. Elira stood beside Nyla, letting their magic hum in soft unison. But Kael’s eyes never left them. When Elira stood to stretch, Kael rose too and intercepted her. “We need to talk.” She tilted her head, curious. Cautious. He took a breath, searching for words that felt smaller than the storm inside him. “Your power is reaching out. To them. To others like her.” She frowned softly. He stepped closer, his voice quiet but strained. “You were born to lead them. But I wasn’t born to... share with you.” Elira’s heart twisted. She touched his chest, letting her light spill into him in silent reassurance. You’re still my mate. But even as he pressed his forehead to hers, she felt it. His fear. Not to lose her life… But of being left behind in the wake of what she was becoming. At dawn, the floor shuddered beneath them. Dust poured from the stone ceiling. A wind blew from beneath the temple, cold, dry, and ancient. Elira bolted upright. So did Nyla. Both girls clutched their marks, eyes wide with revelation. In perfect unison, their voices whispered: “It’s opening.” They followed the wind through a hidden passage, carved into the stone and sealed by time. Lunar runes glowed faintly as they passed, responding to their blood. Nyla clung to Elira’s hand. Her fear had shifted to no longer panic, but awe. And then they reached it. A massive stone door stood embedded in the mountain’s heart. Carved with celestial glyphs, sealed by moonlight and bone. The Hollow Gate. Kael stood frozen behind them, gaze darting between Elira and the door. “Elira... this could be a trap.” She turned to him slowly. Her eyes gleamed silver. Her power didn’t flicker, it blazed. “I was born for this.” His throat tightened but he let her go. Elira stepped forward, placed her glowing palm against the gate. And it awakened. Light raced through the symbols. Magic groaned and pulsed. And with a roar of air and stone, the door opened. Not to a room. To a world. Beyond lay an ancient city untouched by time. Crystalline towers floated midair. Pools of starlight shimmered like liquid mirrors. Marble statues lined the streets: Moonblood warriors, priestesses, guardians. All with eyes like Elira’s. Nyla fell to her knees, overwhelmed. “It’s real... it’s all real.” Elira took a shaky breath and stepped into the light. And somewhere deep inside the Hollow, a bell tolled low and haunting. A summoning. Kael caught up to her and took her hand. “Elira… we can’t do this alone anymore.” She nodded slowly. The Council would come. The Hunters would follow. Sienna was already watching. But this was more than war. This was a legacy. This was home. And Elira, no longer a silent girl with a cursed mark, stood ready to become the leader she was born to be. Far above, from a mountain cliff cloaked in shadows, Sienna watched the Hollow Gate open, her expression unreadable. “She found it,” she muttered. Beside her, High Enforcer Levan’s voice was tight. “Then it began.” The Hollow was a world untouched by time. Elira stood at its entrance, the stone gate humming behind her, sealing itself once more with a shimmer of silver light. The air was cool but alive, charged with ancient energy. It wasn’t just a city, it was a sanctuary, built by Moonbloods before the Council ever existed. Kael kept close behind her, eyes scanning every shadow. Nyla, quiet and wide-eyed, trailed them with hesitant steps, still clutching Elira’s hand like a lifeline. Above them, towers bent toward the sky like reaching fingers. Moonlight poured in through glass crystals embedded in the ceiling. Symbols pulsed faintly across the walls and floor. Elira’s mark responded to it all, glowing steady gold. She had found where she belonged. The Temple of Echoes At the center of the Hollow stood a marble structure crowned by a crescent dome. Elira was drawn to it immediately. Inside, they found a vault with massive doors sealed with light and blood-glyphs. Her crescent flared the moment she stepped forward. The door responded. It slid open with a soft sigh, revealing a room filled with mirrors, scrolls, and glowing stones. A voice echoed faintly from above: “Only those who carry the mark may enter. Only those who lost their voice may hear the truth.” Kael moved to follow, but a pulse of magic threw him back. “Elira!” he shouted. But she was already inside. Alone. Inside the Vault, Elira’s mark began to burn not painfully, but like fire clearing fog from her soul. One of the mirrors shimmered. A figure appeared. Not her reflection but a woman with moonlight eyes and a familiar face. “My daughter.” It was her mother. Aelira Moonshade. Tears welled in Elira’s eyes. “They took everything from us,” the echo said. “Our voices. Our children. Our history. But the Hollow remembers.” Images burst through Elira’s mind: Moonblood warriors, women with glowing skin defending the balance of their world. The Council, younger then, but already corrupt. The burning of temples. The silencing of every Moonblood girl. “They feared our power,” Aelira whispered. “Because they didn’t bow. It led.” “You were hidden to survive. But now, you must rise to lead.” Outside, Kael helped Nyla sit beside the reflecting pool. She was sweating, breathing too fast. Her magic pulsed erratically beneath her skin like it wanted to escape. “Something’s wrong with me,” she whispered. “I feel… like I’m going to explode.” Kael frowned. “Stay calm. Elira will know what to do.” But he couldn’t ignore the dread crawling up his spine. Nyla’s magic wasn’t like Elira’s. It was raw, unstable, untrained. And if she lost control inside the Hollow… No one would survive it. Inside the Vault, Elira reached out to touch the mirror but her mother’s image flickered. “Beware the girl with fire beneath her skin,” the voice said. One of you will burn the gate open. The other will break it forever. Elira gasped. “What does that mean?” But the image vanished. And the Vault’s light went dark. She ran out, heart pounding. Kael rose instantly. “What happened?” But she didn’t answer. Her eyes were on Nyla who now shook violently, her veins glowing like molten silver. “Elira…” Nyla whimpered. “I can’t hold it anymore.” Magic erupted from her chest in a violent wave, cracking the marble floor. Kael tackled her, throwing up a protective shield of his own aura. “Elira, do something!” Elira rushed forward, channeling her light into Nyla’s core. She didn’t push the energy out. She absorbed it, let it thread through her, blending and calming like wind over water. Nyla screamed. Then they collapsed. And Elira, trembling, drenched in sweat, sank beside her. Alive. But shaken. Later that night, they sat beneath the Hollow’s moon-dome, silent. Kael wrapped his arms around Elira’s shoulders. “You could’ve died,” he whispered. “I had to try.” “You keep doing this. Giving pieces of yourself to save others. How long until you run out?” She looked at him, eyes soft. “You asked if you were holding me back. You’re not. You’re keeping me human.” He kissed her forehead. But deep inside… he feared that wouldn’t always be enough. Kael’s Choice The next morning, Kael slipped away. Elira sensed it immediately. She followed him into the crystal corridor and found him with a Council communication stone, hidden in his hand. “Kael,” she whispered. He flinched. “I wasn’t going to use it,” he said. But I wanted to know if… if there was another way. To protect you. Her heart cracked. “You were going to trade me.” “No,” he said quickly. Never. But maybe a truce. A deal. She turned away, pain flashing in her eyes. “You still think I’m a danger.” “I think you’re everything,” he said. “And that terrifies me.” Suddenly, a loud tremor shook the Hollow. A bell rang. Then silence. But Elira’s mark ignited. Sienna had found a way in. And she wasn’t alone.
