Nick opened his eyes and blinked at the brightly lit room. He was in a hospital. That much was clear from the stark white sheets, the gently beeping machines and the antiseptic smell. Why he was in a hospital was not so clear. He had the headache from hell, an aching shoulder and his left arm was in a cast. He racked his brain, trying to remember what had laid him so low, but his mind was blank. The last thing he could remember was driving back from the Mount Morton mine, where he’d been conducting an audit. WhyHe tried sitting up, surprised at how weak and woozy he was. A dark-haired young nurse came in. She smiled brightly when she saw him. ‘So, Nick, you decided to wake up.
