Del spread a queen-sized sheet out on the tiled floor of her galley kitchen. The big dog clumsily lay down on it. ‘Now stay.’ Del turned to go. Her phone had best reception out in the courtyard. The dog uttered a mournful howl. Del frowned at the animal. ‘Shut up, will you? You’ve already cost me a small fortune, and now you want to get me evicted as well?’ It patted its shaggy tail on the floor. Del tried to sneak off, but the dog howled even louder. Del swore and returned to the kitchen. ‘I said, shut up!’ The dog wagged its tail again. It tried to stand but lost its balance and tumbled to the floor with a painful yelp. ‘Stop that,’ she growled. ‘The vet said you should rest.’ Del slapped her forehead.
