Nick stowed away the last of his gear and looked around the humble room. It was number twenty-seven of more than two hundred similar portable units, known as dongas. Each contained a single bed, a bathroom, an air conditioner, a desk, a cupboard, a television, a microwave and a fridge. Basic, but it would do. Earlier that day he’d explored the rest of Mount Morton Village, a place Nick had not visited before. It was located a few kilometres north of the Kingfisher Valley town of Gidgee Creek and provided live-in accommodation for mine workers.
