Chapter 3: A Chance

***One Week Later*** Atlas POV It’s been a week since I last saw her. I can’t get her off my mind. I am on the military base with Noah preparing a tactical plan for a mission that will take place in a few months after we get approval from the White House. Even doing my job she is invading my thoughts. Noah said we have to come up with a perfect plan for a take down and present it to the President and The General of the Army in a week and a half. Even he is noticing I have something on my mind. “Okay. Atlas what’s on your mind? You're clearly distracted and thinking hard about something. We can’t do our jobs right if you keep holding it in.” He looks at me concerned. I sigh as I can’t not tell him, he’s my best friend. “It’s her. It was one night of talking and dancing. The connection we had was ecstatic. Every single time I do something or even think about something she invades my thoughts. It’s driving me crazy how much I am being affected by her.” He smiles and nods his head. “D*mn man, you have it bad. Who knew after all this time of not wanting to settle down with a girl, you meet someone at the club who you can’t stop thinking about. I think you may actually like this girl for more than a fling like normal.” He is right. I have never been so attracted to a girl. I’m not one for a relationship because I prefer my career. But maybe he is right, maybe she is the one that can change me. “I think you may be right but enough about me let’s get this done. We have to meet the President next week and this presentation can’t be crap.” He nods his head, and we proceed to talk about strategies on how we can make our plan better. A few hours later we finally came up with a rock-solid plan. We decided to share it with my team for some more insight but surprisingly there wasn’t much. They agreed my plan was set and ready to be approved. We put everything away to get ready for training. Noah and I trained everyday no matter where we were. Maintaining our fitness was very important for our job. If we slack as team leaders, so does our team. We do a 5-mile run, lift weights, and hand-to-hand combat. It’s usually about 2-3 hours of training before we are finished. **8pm** It’s been a day. I am so ready to go home and relax. I know as a team leader my job never ends but I need a vacation. Also found out that if our mission is approved by the President, we will be shipping out earlier than expected. We still have a few months before we go back but we could leave as early as 2 months from now. I am patiently waiting for Noah to get here so we can go home. But as always, he is taking forever. I look up and here he comes just smiling. “What’s got you so cheery?” I ask. He looks at me with that smile. “Nothing just has some catching up to do with an officer.” I can’t help but laugh and shake my head. We arrive at home and I go straight for my shower. Best part of the day is a hot shower. I always make sure to enjoy them here at home because we don’t get them often overseas. After my shower I go down to get some food and watch some TV. Not long after, I went to my room to go to bed. ***** Alexis POV It’s been a very long work week and I can’t help but be excited. I have the next week off to spend with my dad and brother. Alex comes home tomorrow from Iraq. It’s been 11 months since I last saw him. My big brother is almost 30 and we have always been super close even when he is super protective. Hot showers are the absolute best after a stressful day at the hospital. I lost 2 car accident patients who died before they made it to me. Doesn’t make it easier but I am grateful for the ones I can save. “Bzzzzz, bzzzz, BZZZZ” I finish washing off and step out with a towel wrapped around me. It’s my dad calling. I smile and answer, “Hi daddy!” “Hey princess, can you come to my office for a minute? I have something I want to discuss with you.” “Yes, let me get changed and I’ll be right there.” Mhm, I wonder what that’s about. I change and head downstairs to go to the Oval Office. His secretary sees me coming and automatically opens the doors for me to enter. As I walk in, I see the General and my father waiting for me. I embrace my dad and shake General Estrada’s hand. Once done with pleasantries, I look at them both and wonder and worry starts to take over. “Okay you both are freaking me out what’s wrong? Oh my God! Is it Alex?” My dad shakes his head and I turn to the General. “No Alexis, your brother is fine. I have been discussing with your father about a very important mission that will be taking place in a few months once approved. And as I told your father we need someone who can speak multiple languages and has doctor skills as part of it.” My eyes shoot open and I look at my father who is staring at me. “You need me to go on a mission with a team of soldiers?” I am shocked because I’ve asked before to be a civilian doctor for the military and my dad always said no. I am intrigued. “I understand if you say no for obvious reasons. You could be a real asset to the team. You're already trained like they are in everything from fighting and weapons. You would have full privileges like they do if necessary.” The General says explaining to me. “Okay, so I would be armed for myself and have a team of soldiers with me?” I am a little hesitant. As long as I am armed for myself, we will be good. I won’t rely on someone else when bullets are flying all around me. “Lex are you seriously considering this?” My dad asked, concerned. I look at him and pace for a minute before looking at them both. “Dad, I once asked you if I could be a civilian doctor for the military once I graduated and go on missions to help our soldiers. In fact, I used to beg but you would never let me because of who I am. Now I have an opportunity to do what I have always wanted to do.” They look at each other and back at me. “Okay, you can join the mission. However, there are two conditions. 1. You have to complete a 2-week training course like you're used to in order to prepare yourself for active combat. 2. You are to always be armed. General that means she gets her own rifle and her own pistol and any other gear she may need.” I nod in agreement and so does the General. General Estrada and my father go over the details with me of what is to come in the following weeks. I found out I will be going with the Army Special Forces team. I am excited but I know it’s serious. I used to go to military school, and I would run through the courses with others when I traveled with my father to different bases. I got pretty good but never had any desire to join the military which is why I wanted to stay civilian but work with them. “There is a meeting next week with the leaders of the team you will be joining to go over the plan. Now they don’t know you are joining them. They have medics but no one is female with your language skills. They also don’t know your female or a civilian. I need you to be here and ready to take on the leaders, no doubt they will question you and your abilities.” My father says. I nod in understanding. “I will be here just let me know when. I have no problem setting the record straight in defending my abilities.” I say with confidence. Once we are done, I hug my father and shake General Estrada’s hand. I walk back to my suite to process the information I was just given. I am going on a mission with the U.S. Army Delta Force team. I am excited and confident I will be able to do my job. But I am a little worried about what team I am going with. It’s a team of 16 men with just me. They are not going to be happy to have a woman joining their team. There are a brotherhood and having an outside person join is going to affect them all in a way. It’s going to take a lot to gain their trust. I drift off to sleep not long after the meeting. The exhaustion was catching up and it was time for my week vacation to start.
