Chapter 4: Welcome Home

1702 Words
Atlas POV I wake up to the sun coming through the blind’s and I can hear birds chirping outside. I smile as I think of her and wonder what she is doing. It’s almost 9am and I have to report to base by 10:30am for a C-130 arriving with soldiers coming home. At the base there are many families and friends lined up on the tarmac to welcome home their loved ones. They need extra security all around the tarmac as a high-profile VIP is joining the celebration. Noah and I are laid across a roof with sniper rifles, watching the crowd for potential threats as 3 black SUVs arrive. I focus on who it is and it’s the President. “Definitely wasn’t expecting that!” Noah says over coms. I laugh, “Yeah neither was I.” Mr. President gives his speech of welcoming the soldiers home. The soldiers disperse and there is lots of crying and celebration. The President gets to his car, and they pull into a hangar and close the doors. “Dude, do we have to stay up here, or can we go now?” Noah asks. “We stay put until the President is completely out of sight.” I say to my team. “YES SIR” they all reply! Alexis POV I woke up early and excited to finally have my brother home. I take a shower, do my hair and makeup, and get dressed. It’s 9:45am and I am heading to the Oval Office to meet my father to get ready to go to the base for the soldier's return. We leave at 10:15am and after a 30-minute drive we arrive on the tarmac where the plane carrying Alex has landed. Soldiers are unloading and lining up. I stay in the SUV as a safety concern and to stay away from the cameras. They don’t really know what I look like but I can’t risk it with the meeting with my mission coming up. My identity being released can get my team killed for leverage used against my father. The soldiers are all lined up and I see my father getting ready for his speech when I see him. I finally see my brother and all I want to do is wrap my arms around him and give him the biggest hug in the world. After my father delivers the welcome home speech, we load back up into the SUV and drive to a hangar nearby where the doors shut. I get out of the SUV once the hangar is shut and go talk to my father. We are waiting for my brother to come in. After about 15 minutes I see a door open at the far end of the hangar. It’s Alex. I smile and start to tear up as he drops his bags and we run to each other. I jump into his arms to give him the biggest hug and the tears start rolling. I am so happy he is finally home. Once we finally compose ourselves, we walk back to my father who is teary eyed as well. They embrace each other and then we all hug. It’s good to have him home. Heading home we chat and laugh like we used to. It was nice. I catch him up on everything he has missed. We get home and he goes to his room and gets settled before joining me before dinner. *** Alex POV My name is Alex Christian Knight, and I am 29 years old. I am a Master Sergeant medic in the U.S. Army. I joined the military right out of the military school I went to. My sister went there with me. I decided on medicine to help people who were defending our country. What better way to serve them on the front lines with the soldiers? My job is to aid them when sick or hurt. I love my job and my country. My sister Alexis is my best friend, and she is my world. I don’t have any kids or a wife, but I do have her and my father. We have been close our entire lives despite the age gap. With her being so smart she graduated the military fast and decided to go into medicine and become a doctor. I couldn’t be prouder. Arriving back home was the best moment ever. My dad gave his speech and I saw they pulled into a hangar close by waiting for me to join. Once I get to the hangar, I see my baby sister and I can’t help but to get teary eyed. I have missed her so much. I drop my bags as she is running and I meet her halfway. She jumps in my arms, and I embrace her with the biggest hug ever. She is crying and I can’t help crying either. I have missed her and my father so much. As I am holding her. I look over and see my father with tears in his eyes and a smile on his face. Man, it’s good to be home. I set Alexis down and we compose ourselves before walking back to my father. I salute him and give him a hug, moments later I bring my sister in too. After a wonderful reunion with my family I load up in Alexis’s SUV with her bodyguard Cohen. We talk as she catches me up on life as a doctor and the soldiers she has been treating from overseas. I can’t help but smile as she talks so gracefully about saving our soldiers. She is a bad*ss doctor. ** I am home for a few months before heading on a new tour, so I am going to take this time and spend as much time as possible with her and dad. We get home and I walk through Alexis’s suite into mine. We have an adjoining door in the living room between our apartments. I take some time to relax and take a shower after a long flight before I go to her room to watch some Netflix before dinner. ***Alexis POV*** It’s almost 7pm and we must get ready for dinner with our father. Alex fell asleep not long after we got home so I watched TV as he slept. It was peaceful. I look at the time and realize he has to wake up. I walk over and tap his shoulder, “time to wake up, we have dinner with dad in 45 minutes.” He rubs his eyes and gets up to go change. We decided to go to our favorite place and get pizza. No one is in the building, it's just us and honestly it was. One of the best dinners I have had in a long time. Family makes my heart so full. We laugh and joke and catch up. It was perfect. After dinner we head back. Alex said he was going to stay with me like old times. We get up in my king size bed and turn on our favorite show Grey’s Anatomy. We both work in the medical field so of course our favorite show would be medicine or some sort. We stay up for hours before I pass out. **** Bzzzz, bzzzz, bzzzz, I look over and it’s my phone. “Hello?” “Dr. Knight, I know you’re on vacation, but Specialist Victor Keller woke up.” I shoot my eyes open and jump out of bed. “HE WHAT!” I shout, completely shocked, how he is awake. “Doctor, he is stable and talking, he wants to see you.” I turn and see Alex sitting up looking at me. I smile and take a deep breath. “Tell that soldier he is not to move, and nobody is to do anything until I get there, unless absolutely necessary.” I hang up and look at my brother smiling. “Why are you smiling like that?” I ask. He shakes his head, “no reason just a proud big brother moment.” I giggle “I have to go check on a soldier who has woken up. Would you like to tag along?” He smiles nodding his head and gets up. I run to get dressed in jeans, a summer blouse, and my favorite white converse. We met at my door in 10 minutes. Alex is dressed in blue jeans, a blue shirt and white sneakers. We always seem to match in a way without trying. We laugh as we notice but we can’t change. We get out at the doors and get to the ICU. Kailey has my coat already. Alex has his ID on so he can enter as I can. I walk over to Keller’s room. He is sitting up and smiles as I walk in. “You must be the doctor who saved my life.” He speaks. I nodded. He smiles and has tears in his eyes “Thank you for saving me.” He says, shaking my hand. I smile and look back at Alex who is watching me at the door. Keller follows my glance and says “Master Sergeant Knight?” I turn back and forth to Alex. He walks forward to the other side. He is smiling as he walks up. “Victor Keller, glad to see you made it from my medical bay overseas to here in one piece.” I was shocked. “Wait, you treated him in Iraq before he was sent here?” They both nod and Keller looks at me. “He pulled me out after the bombing and did what he could before I was shipped home. He saved my life before you did.” I looked at Alex with admiration and couldn't help but be proud. “I am glad you were sent here to her care; she is one of the best. I am glad you made it.” Alex says proudly. After talking with both soldiers we leave to head out to spend the next few days doing anything and everything. From shopping, to exploring, to going to our favorite beach like we did as kids.
