CHAPTER 4

The moment the doctor stepped in, my midwife quickly kept the baby back in the cot. Then she walked to me, a sense of urgency in her voice. "I need to wheel you away from all of this. You are still weak and sore from —" "You shall do nothing of that sort!" thundered the Alpha. "I do not give a f**k if she's sore from childbirth or what, she must be here to face her antenatal doctor." The doctor in question crept closer, already aware of the tension in the room but not knowing the details of it. Giving a little bow, she politely asked what was going on. "You were her doctor through pregnancy, right?" Ephrata questioned. Before answering, the doctor glanced across to meet my eyes, as though asking: 'What the hell is happening with you? Do I need to cover up for something?' I stared back at her, not knowing how to pass the message, as Ephrata's sharp eyes were fixed on both of us. "If you stare any longer at her," he said, "I'm not going to believe anything you say." "I'm sorry, sir," she exclaimed, her face gearing up in alarm, "I am only surprised she put to bed NOW. She still had a full month to go. The baby might not survive…" At this, Ephrata became fidgety. Panic flashed across his eyes and he was thrown into silence. I know what was going through his mind. Anger, fear. For these years, he had finally had a male heir, and it was premature?! "This is a premature birth?" he asked, looking at the three women at once. The midwife nodded. "Her water broke way too early. Just after you, um..." The words dried in her mouth. "After the visitors left." I sighed inwardly, remembering. I had gone into premature labour moments after Ephrata had slapped my face in front of his guests, for "showing my pregnant, dirty self" in public. The amount of emotional and physical pain I had felt had triggered the premature labour. Now as I thought about it, I realized there was another big problem: the survival of my twins. If this one here was to survive, how about the other one who had been whisked away by some strange couple? The antenatal doctor became animated. "If that is the case, then we must take action immediately!" "What do I do?" Ephrata asked, his voice betraying his twirling emotions. "Order an ambulance," continued the medical expert, "we shall drive Chloe to a proper health facility. Alongside the..." She glanced skeptically into the cot, saw only one baby, glanced at the midwife, and then went on. "Alongside the baby." I stared at Ephrata; had he forgotten the question of the number of babies? I was momentarily relieved, but the next moment, the bodyguard returned. "The couple is nowhere to be found in the whole mansion," he announced. This caught Ephrata's interest again. But another voice was immediately heard: "The baby isn't breathing well anymore!" It was the midwife again, just cutting in when she needed to. She picked the child up, examining it. The antenatal doctor took one glance at the baby and frowned in puzzlement; the baby was breathing just fine. It was so hard to communicate with the Alpha here! "We need that ambulance now," continued the midwife. "Go, guard, call the ambulance!" The worried Alpha Dad took up the baton. "And set a 15-car convoy. We are taking the baby to New York. Hurry." As this went on, the antenatal doctor came to prepare me for the trip. Then whispered, "You need to tell me something, Chloe?" I wanted to answer back, but Ephrata would hear me. So I discreetly showed the doctor my two fingers. "And where's the other dosage?" the doctor asked, figuratively meaning "other baby." "I offered someone the dosage. For me." Although I was terrified, I was a bit relieved that the doctor was understanding. So I didn't expect what came next. "Holy s**t," the doctor swore and pulled me up the bed. Then led me towards a private room. "You did what?!" she asked the moment we were out of earshot. "I hid the second one," I whispered, fighting the tears in her eyes. "Why! Why would you do such a thing?" I paused, remembering the words of Robert, the ruthless Beta. I said in a broken voice, "Ephrata detests me. Even after giving him an heir, he still doesn't regard me. I cannot stay here any longer. I could have hid the two if it was possible." "Are you stupid?" asked the doctor, startling me. “Have you gone crazy?” My mouth fell open. "What?" “You want to hide an Alpha's child? In his own pack?” I looked away, not answering. "Remember where you came from, Chloe," the doctor continued with heightened rage. "You were just an Omega who found a very rare favour in the Alpha's eyes. None of his past 7 breeders had gotten a single boy! And you got two! Yet you choose to play this stupid game..." Her eyes went wide, and she trembled as she spoke. "I swear I'm going to give you away to save myself, if it gets to it. So much for being an Omega with a dirty secret!" she sneered. "I shall take all the blame," I said firmly, instantly hating this woman before me. "Just make sure my baby doesn't die." "And the other one you hid?” Honestly, I didn't have an answer to this. Where was the couple? Who were they? Would they have the good sense of administering the baby in an incubator, too? "Tell me why you are hiding one of the Alpha's babies," the doctor insisted. "I gave birth to one baby, let's keep it that way, please." "Then you leave me no choice." As she said this, she fished out a slip of paper from her bag. I immediately recognised it. "This is your test scan results, showing you were pregnant with twins." She waved it in my face. "Guess who'd love to see this, too?" And before I could stop her, she brushed out of the room. Then came the treacherous doctor's voice: "Can I speak with you, Alpha Ephrata?"
