Chapter 4 Running Out of Blood

584 Words
The lawyer flinched at the shout, clearly confused. "Didn't you sign the divorce agreement yourself?" Zane froze for a second, like he was trying to remember when that ever happened. Then it hit him. He turned and rushed toward me. I grabbed the driver's shoulder with my blood-covered hand. "Go! Drive!" The driver was too scared to move. I knew why. Zane's authority over these people was absolute. I wasn't going to get dragged back there. With my uninjured left hand, I wrapped my arm around the driver's neck. "I said drive!" Between pissing off Zane and staying alive, the driver made the smart choice. The car lurched forward. Zane missed me by inches. His eyes were red as he shouted after me. "Faye! Why are you doing this? I treated you so well, and you used the divorce agreement I gave you to file for divorce?!" I sat in the car, watching him shrink in the distance, and I couldn't help but laugh. He scattered my parents' ashes, slapped me ninety-nine times in public, and destroyed my right hand so I could never hold a pen again. And that's what he calls treating me well? I never realized his love could be this terrifying. The car sped down the road. The driver finally spoke, his voice shaky. "Ma'am… please let go of me. This is dangerous." I released him and said quietly, "Sorry." He glanced at me with sympathy. "I get it. You didn't have a choice. Where do you want to go? I'll send you." I looked down at my hand, still bleeding heavily. My body felt weaker by the second. But instead of giving him a hospital address, I told him somewhere completely different. The driver froze. "Ma'am… why are you going to Mr. Hayes's biggest rival's company?" "Just drive… hurry…" If he kept talking, I might bleed out right here. The car finally stopped in front of the Vile Group building. The driver got out and opened the door for me, but I had already lost too much blood. The moment my feet touched the ground, I collapsed. Ethan Vile, who had just walked out of the building, rushed over and caught me. "Faye! Your hand… quick, get the car, we're going to the hospital!" Relief washed over me. Then everything went black. ***** When I woke up, I was lying in a hospital room that smelled sharply of disinfectant. The first thing I saw was Ethan's face, filled with worry. "Faye, who did this to your hand?!" No one knew this, but Ethan and I grew up together. On the day I got married, he left the country. Honestly, when I told the driver to come here, I didn't expect to actually see him. I had no idea he was already back. Ethan saw the tears in my eyes and understood immediately. "Was it Zane?" Thinking about these past seven years of marriage and how it all ended like this, my tears slipped down again. I didn't want to talk about anything related to Zane ever again. Ethan slammed his fist hard against the bedside table. "I saw the news. The way he looked at Fiona, I knew something was off, so I came back. I just didn't expect him to go this far." He came back… because of me. Ethan reached out and gently wiped my tears away. "You i***t. Why didn't you tell me when you were hurting? Your parents are gone, but you still have me."
