Marisol
I had a nightmare.
My horrifying nightmare was reminiscent of my past ordeals. In a world where I didn’t care about the prophecy about me, but was ready to chase my heart to the very end. There he was— Caelum.
Ready to defy the world and their expectations of me, Caelum and I decided to elope together until my mother got wind of my plan, turned the whole thing around, and accused him of kidnapping me.
I should have fought for him till my last breath. However, I was a coward, riddled with fear, not daring to speak up more because of what could have happened to his loved ones, even though they all ended up dead.
And now, freckled hazel eyes with a darkened face stare back at me, driving a knife to my chest and…
Drenched in sweat, I jolted awake, my breath coming in short gasps as my chest heaved up and down. There was this tightening and throbbing pain in my head, and—
My eyes flared wide in fear as I swiveled my eyes around the room. Where was I?
Just at that moment, my heart slammed against my ribcage when the chaotic events where I was about to be set on fire flashed through my mind. The accusations. Claudia’s betrayal and, worse, Caelum.
Wasn’t he supposed to be dead?
All of a sudden, a voice that made my heart turn cold in my chest filled my ears, sending a shiver skating down my spine as fear crawled up my throat. That was…
Caelum’s voice.
I turned, my gaze landing on the man who stared out the window. He was wearing black loose pants, a cream-colored knitted sweater, and probably sipping coffee.
Maybe.
When he turned to the side, revealing his side profile, my heart almost leaped into my throat, and at that moment, one thing dawned on me. If he saved me, he saved me for one thing: To kill me.
“You are awake, you have been sleeping for hours,” He reiterated.
The only sound that I could hear was that of my heart thundering in my chest as my fingers curled around my dress. “Rumor has it that you are mute, Luna Marisol.” He turned, his eyes locking with mine, and my heart stopped.
He clicked his tongue. “There is a notepad beside you, use that in communicating until your phone is delivered this evening,” Caelum said, his voice devoid of any emotion.
Without thinking twice, I reached for the note and scribbled on it, my heart pounding with fear as a fresh wave of hope and relief hit me. “Caelum?”
He sauntered to me, taking a glance at the notepad before fixing his eyes back on me. “Who is Caelum?”
I froze.
My brows knitted in confusion, and on taking a closer look at his face, something hit me. The eye colors were completely different. Caelum had hazel eyes, but the man who stood before me had dark brown eyes.
Caelum had a mole on his cheek, and he had none.
If he wasn’t Caelum, then who was this?
How could they have the same face except for some distinctive features? What tricks was the moon goddess playing here?
My mouth parted, and disbelief wrenched at me as he tossed the notepad at me, staring at me warily. I scribbled on the note immediately. “You are not Caelum?”
His face scrunched, staring at me like I had gone crazy. “What are you talking about?”
What the hell. This man wasn’t Caelum?
He blinked his eyes away, cleared his throat, and fixed me with a stern gaze. “I am just going to make this simple and clear to you. I am Alpha Atticus, the Alpha of the North Moon pack.”
As soon as he mentioned that name, terror seized the expression on my face, and fear sent a shiver skating down my spine.
He was the mysterious Alpha of the North whose name meant nothing but terror. No one dared whisper his name, and at the same time, no one knew what he looked like except for the terror he had always spread around.
He was called the silent striker. When he sets eyes on a pack, he invades them and takes control by appointing his men as the Alphas.
While Julian was away, I tried not to catch his attention and made sure the pack was secured as securely as possible. He also never attacked the pack.
Anyways, Julian hated him because before he left, he would always send threatening messages to the pack and put Julian on the very edge. All of Julian’s plans to uncover his identity always failed, so he was Julian’s nightmare. His worst enemy.
Who would have known that the man who looked exactly like Caelum was him?
However, why did he save me?
“I want something from you.” A muscle in his jaw ticked, and while he held a striking resemblance to Caelum, I couldn’t help but decipher that they were completely different when it came to the presence they carried.
While Caelum was undeniably sweet, this man had an edge to him. His eyes were cold and unreadable, too hard to read, and beneath that calm facade was a man who smelled dangerous.
Dangerously attractive and dangerous enough to tear me in two.
His presence made my fingers tremble as I scribbled on the notepad. “What do you want from me?”
“Marriage.” His eyes pinned me down.
My heart slammed against my ribcage, and I stared at him in shock because what?
“Why did you save me?” I wrote.
He rolled up his sleeves. “Julian had killed some of my men on his return to the pack, and most importantly, my brother. I planned to attack him, but on setting eyes on you, it dawned on me that you could be used as a pawn for the bigger plan. Since you are the Luna, you will have information beneficial to me on how to take down Julian,” He said calmly.
Too calm.
He wanted to use me for his revenge against Julian? As much as I wanted to get back at Julian, a marriage with a man that I had just met, a man who looked like my first love, didn’t make any sense.
“Another reason for this marriage is that the elders of the werewolf court want me to make someone else my Luna. My wife had done something atrocious, and instead of paying for her crimes, she slipped into a coma.” His eyes darkened.
“There are no chances of her waking up. She is as good as dead.” A muscle in his clenched jaw ticked, and his fingers curled into fists.
His darkened eyes met mine. “So, what do you say?”
What did he mean? It was a No! My heart broke for the woman in a coma…
I wrote, “No!”
Atticus nodded, a smile that faltered, creeping at the corner of his mouth, and in the next minute, he called for his beta.
What was going on?
Maybe he was genuinely a nice person to have taken the rejection easily. Most Alphas would have had me condemned to death for rejecting such an Alpha.
This man was dangerously different.
The Beta, called Luca, came into the room, running a hand through his blonde hair. “Alpha Atticus”
Atticus’ face was devoid of emotion. “Draft an apology message and send it to Alpha Julian of the Wolffe Solstice pack. Do not apologize for the attacks; instead, apologize for interfering in the execution of his Luna, and take this woman back to him.”
My heart froze.
Returning to Julian spelled death for me and…
No!
Panic bled through my veins, and before he could leave, I moved away from the bed at the speed of light, rushing towards him while grabbing his arm.
He stopped, staring at my fingers curled around his arms before they snapped back to mine. “What
I didn’t need a soothsayer before knowing that I needed to step back.
I retracted my step, reaching for the notepad and the pen. “I will do it?”
“Do what?”
He knew what I was talking about. He just wanted me to say it.
“Marry you,” I wrote, biting my lower lip.
Alpha Atticus nodded, and I could have sworn that he mentioned something like “as you should,” but instead, he fixed his eyes back on Luca. “Announce to the elders that there will be a new Luna. Also, the wedding preparations should begin”
What!
That was too fast.
Before I could react, he was out of the room, and at that moment, the reality of what I was doing hit me as I ran a hand through my hair.
This man wasn’t Caelum. He had a wife who was in a coma. He could be lying against her just to get rid of her.
“What am I doing?” I thought to myself, running a hand through my hair.
At the same time, the last thing I wanted was to return to Julian. He was going to kill me at first sight.
This marriage was the only way I could survive Julian’s vengeful claws. It would offer me protection, power, and I could get back at Julian and the other people for what they had done to me.
This was the best decision, right?
