Chapter 24
Layne paced the living room near the staircase and front door. He kept a watchful eye on Hope as she spent some much-needed time with Adalyn. It helped divert her attention from the stress eating her alive. How could she not feel overwhelmed? Her mother still hadn’t regained consciousness.
Dylan had injured Scott too, but at least Scott regained consciousness, along with Zeke and Captain Laveaux’s guard. Otherwise, Hope would be in their room, by her husband’s side. Scott was the one who’d insisted she leave the room.
It hadn’t been easy on her to do so, which was why Layne allowed her to take Adalyn for a while. She needed to stay busy. Her niece was doing an excellent job at keeping her entertained with all her cooing and smiles.
