Chapter 6 Layne gripped his knees, leaning his weight into them as he lowered his head and wept. His shoulders shook with every sob. Each sob leaving his throat shook his shoulders. Heaven always had the power to destroy him with one simple word. Goodbye. All of this was a nightmare, one that kept him in its shadowy grasp while it slowly devoured the remaining pieces of his heart. Footsteps sounded from the hall. He sucked in another weary breath and faced the door when it swung open. His mother walked into the room. As soon as she noticed him, she rushed his way. “My sweet boy.” He wanted her to leave. She’d lost his trust. While she may not have been the one who’d devalued his connection with Heaven, she hadn't been forthcoming with information. Not until it was too late. “Layne.”
