Morning came quietly. Too quietly. The kind of quiet that didn’t soothe—but watched. Emma woke before anyone entered her room. Before the nurses. Before the routine. Her eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the pale light filtering through the curtains. For a few seconds, she didn’t move. She just listened. The faint hum of machines. Footsteps in distant corridors. Muted voices beyond closed doors. Everything sounded… normal. Which meant nothing was. Emma inhaled slowly, then let the breath out—controlled, measured. Her gaze drifted toward the door. Closed. Still. Uncertain. Her fingers moved slightly against the bedsheet. Pain pulsed faintly through her body—her leg immobilized, her head heavy—but it felt distant. Secondary. Because something else had taken over. Clarity.
