Chapter 8: Fire that does not burn

Kaelen did not put a sword in my hand. He did not make me run until my legs gave way or fight until I could not stand. On my first morning at Silvermist, he led me to a clearing deep within the pine woods — quiet, surrounded by ancient trees, open to the sky — and said something I did not expect. "Your body is already strong. You have carried stones and water skins for eighteen years. What you must learn to master… is not your strength. It is your light." He sat on a stone across from me, his expression serious. "The power you carry is not like ours. Our wolves are part of us — wild, hungry, quick to anger. Yours is different. It is older. Calmer. It does not feed on rage — it feeds on you. On your heart. On your will. If you let it rule you… it will burn everything around you. If you rule it… it will become the greatest shield this land has ever known." I frowned, my hands tightening in my lap. "So how do I rule something I do not understand?" "You listen," Kaelen said simply. "Close your eyes. Feel the power inside you. And tell it… to be still." I closed my eyes. And instantly, I felt it — that humming, singing, vast and endless thing that slept beneath my skin. It was awake now. It was eager. It wanted to grow. To spill outward. To shine. I told it: Be still. It did not listen. The hum rose. Heat flared in my chest. When I opened my eyes, Kaelen was leaning back, shielding his face — because light was pouring from me, glowing through my skin, turning my hands to silver fire. Panic flared — and the light exploded outward. A shockwave of pure brilliance blasted through the clearing. Trees swayed. Stones rattled. Kaelen’s cloak fluttered violently as if caught in a gale. And then — just as suddenly — it was gone. I sat there, breathless, my heart hammering, every muscle trembling. Kaelen lowered his arm. He was not angry. He was not afraid. He was studying me. "You commanded it," he said quietly. "But you did not mean it. You feared it. And power like this… it feeds on fear. It grows wild when you are afraid." He leaned forward. "It is not a beast to be tamed, Luna. It is a part of you. It answers to your heart. When you are angry — it destroys. When you are afraid — it overwhelms. But when you are calm… when you are steady… it becomes something else entirely." He gestured to the clearing around us. "Try again. But this time — do not fight it. Love it. It is yours. It saved you. It kept you alive through every blow and every winter night. Speak to it like you would speak to your own heart. Tell it… we are safe. We are whole. Rest now." I closed my eyes again. This time, I did not command. I reached inward — past the heat, past the roar, past the blinding brilliance — and found the quiet, steady core beneath. I spoke in my mind, soft and sure: I am not afraid of you. You are part of me. We are safe. Be at peace. Slowly — so slowly I almost did not feel it — the heat faded. The hum softened into a gentle thrum, matching my own heartbeat. The light withdrew, sinking back beneath my skin, settling like a child curling into bed. When I opened my eyes, the clearing was still. The air was calm. And I felt… whole. Light. Balanced. Kaelen smiled — a rare, quiet thing that transformed his face. "There," he said. "You did not conquer it. You became its home." Days passed. Then weeks. Every morning, we returned to the clearing. I learned to call the light forth — not in a blinding explosion, but as a soft glow, warm and steady. I learned to wrap it around my hands like a shield. I learned to weave it into a barrier that nothing could pass — not fire, not blade, not shadow. And I learned the hardest lesson of all: anger makes it weak. Once, in frustration, I shouted at the light to grow. It flared bright — brilliant, blinding — and then it wavered. It dimmed. It trembled. "Emotion is fuel," Kaelen told me. "But anger is dirty fuel. It burns fast and hot… and then it is gone. Peace — that is the purest fuel of all. Calm certainty. Steady purpose. That is what the Moon answers to." So I learned to breathe. To centre myself. To find that quiet place within, no matter what was happening around me. And slowly, steadily… I began to understand. One evening, as the sun set and the moon began to rise, Kaelen brought a single silver blade to the clearing. He set it in the earth between us. "Silver burns every wolf," he said. "It weakens us. It can kill us. Touch it." I hesitated. I remembered Vesper’s blade — the pain, the fire, the wound that had woken me. But then I looked at Kaelen — steady, trusting — and I reached inward. I found that quiet place. I wrapped myself in light. And I touched the silver. It did not burn. It felt cool. Smooth. Ordinary. Kaelen’s eyes widened. "The legends were true. The Moon’s Heir… she does not bow to silver. She commands it." I pulled my hand back, staring at my fingers. Unmarked. Unscathed. "Because," I whispered, realisation dawning bright and clear, "silver comes from the moon. It is not my enemy. It is mine." Kaelen nodded gravely. "You are learning, Luna. But remember this: the Shadow Council knows this too. They know what you are. They know what you can do. And while you have been learning to control your light… they have been gathering their darkness." He stood, looking toward the darkening treeline. "Your parents have sent word. They have found traces. The elders who stole you… they have been meeting in secret. Planning something. And they know exactly where you are." I stood too. I looked at my hands — at the faint silver glow that lingered there, waiting. Fear tried to rise. But this time… I did not let it. I breathed deep. I found my centre. And I spoke to the night, quiet and sure: "Let them come. I am not the little girl they abandoned. I am not the slave they mocked. I am Luna. And I am ready." Above us, the moon broke through the clouds — brilliant, silver, and full. And for the first time… it did not feel like something watching me from afar. It felt like allies standing at my back.
