CHAPTER 4
ChristopheI was happy to do my first interview with Christophe, a fellow French citizen. Language would not be a barrier this time around, which was comforting. Still, I felt some apprehension. I kept wondering how the others were feeling, how traumatized they were by this ordeal, and whether or not they would be willing to discuss it with me.
My questions were mundane, at first.
“Where are you from?”
“Paris, just like everyone else,” he replied, visibly annoyed.
“How long have you been in Dubai for?”
“Three years.”
“Did you know anything about the region before you came to settle here?”
“Not one bit. First time I heard of Dubai, I couldn’t even find it on a map. A city from the Gulf, not too far from Saudi Arabia. That’s pretty much it.
