Chapter 6
The Threshold
3 Years Later
The fervent hope that had consumed Matt three years ago still burned, though the frantic online searches had long ceased. His pursuit had matured, much like he had, shifting from desperate clicks to a quiet, unwavering determination. He still chased leads, following whispers of packs with a new arrival or attending regional gatherings with a keen, searching gaze. Each dead end was simply another name to cross off his mental list, bringing him one step closer to the gray-eyed girl who haunted his waking thoughts and dreams. The detailed memories of the party had faded into a more general longing, but the underlying pull of the mate bond never truly ceased. Life, as it always did, had continued its relentless march forward. He had embraced his training, his duties, growing into the future Alpha his pack needed, yet a piece of him remained tethered to that fleeting encounter on the balcony.
"Matt! It's time to go! If we don't leave now, you'll be late for your graduation!" Lizzie's voice floated up from downstairs.
"I'm coming, Liz! Just getting my shoes on." Matt called back, giving himself a last look over in the mirror. The last vestiges of his teenage awkwardness were gone. The glass no longer reflected a boy, but a formidable young man. His caramel brown hair, styled slightly longer, softened the sharp lines of his now defined jaw, framing eyes the color of steel that held a calm, observant intelligence, reflecting the steady gaze of maturity. His profile, once boyish, now sharp and proud. Towering at 6’6”, his broad shoulders and commanding height perfectly mirrored his father’s imposing presence, carrying himself with an undeniable, quiet strength.
Matt made his way down the stairs, his gaze sweeping across his family members. Liz, only slightly older but still radiating her Luna presence, stood beside Arthur, her chosen mate. Their courtship had been a whirlwind since meeting at the Alpha Summit a year ago, and his steady, comforting presence was a welcome addition to their family. Arthur, the Beta of the Moon Crescent Pack, had quickly captured Liz's admiration with his genuine kindness towards the young pups at the summit, and his ocean blue eyes had sealed the deal. They'd deliberately postponed setting a wedding date, ensuring this day, Matt's graduation, had its full focus.
His father, Alpha Daniel, showed his age a bit more, copper hair streaked with gray, but his unwavering Alpha presence remained undimmed. Lines around his steel gray eyes spoke of wisdom and battles fought. A skirmish with rouges had left him with a lingering knee injury, and he now leaned lightly on a cane. His mother, graceful as ever, casually assisted her husband. Gray hairs occasionally flecked her otherwise dark hair, and her emerald eyes held a deeper wisdom with each passing year. She was still as beautiful as he remembered her.
Matt's family, all gathered here in their home, celebrated his high school graduation. His high school years are a blur, but memories surfaced. Meeting his best friend, Chuck, an omega, during their sophomore year when Chuck was being bullied. Then junior year brought Emily, a new student, a young she-wolf whose family had recently sought refuge in the Silver Moon Pack. The three of them—Matt, Chuck, and Emily—had become inseparable, an unlikely but fiercely loyal trio.
“Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go get my diploma!” Matt grinned.
At Silver Moon High, Matt located his best friend's. Greeting them with hugs and congratulatory statements. He quickly said goodbye to his family, with promises of finding them after the ceremony. Matt and his friend took their respective places in line. The air in the auditorium buzzed with anticipation, the scent of hundreds of nervous and excited wolves in human form filling the space. The principal's voice, thin and reedy, droned through a list of thank-yous that blurred into a dull hum. Faculty members offered platitudes about the future, each word a hollow echo in the vast auditorium. Matt shifted, the stiff fabric of his gown scratching his shoulders, his fingers drumming a silent rhythm against his thigh, eager for it to be over.
Finally, his father, Alpha Daniel, approached the podium, his presence immediately commanding silence. His voice, deep and resonant, filled the hall without needing amplification. "Today, we celebrate not just an academic milestone, but a pivotal moment in the lives of these young wolves," he began, his gaze sweeping across the graduating class, lingering momentarily on Matt. "You stand at the threshold of true adulthood. The skills you've honed, the friendships you've forged—these are the bedrock of your future. But now, as you step beyond these halls, the path truly begins. Now is the time to finalize your choices, to embrace your roles, and to define the wolves you are destined to be."
Matt felt a subtle shift in his seat, a familiar tightening in his chest. His father's words, though addressed to all, felt pointed, a direct reminder of the heavy mantle he was soon to inherit. Finalize your choices. The words echoed in his mind, immediately bringing to the forefront the one choice, the one path, he still hadn't finalized. His future as Alpha was coming soon, and with it, the undeniable expectation of a Luna by his side.
