Chapter 1: The Shifting Hour

861 Words
The Shifting Hour Matthew's fifteenth birthday arrived, bringing with it a tide of nerves that felt less like waves and more like a rising flood. Tonight, he’d shift into his wolf for the first time, a highly anticipated rite for future high-ranking wolves like him. It was also the day he'd begin to seek his fated mate. Tall for his age, Matthew ran a hand through his striking copper hair, a nervous habit that did little to calm the anxiety mirroring in his deep gray eyes. His prominent cheekbones gave him an air of maturity beyond his years, subtly hinting at the commanding presence of a future Alpha. Beyond his closed door, he could already hear the growing hum of the party downstairs—the easy laughter of long-time friends, the excited chatter of pack members, and the rich, savory smell of cooked venison wafting up from the kitchens, a familiar comfort overshadowed by his apprehension. A soft knock startled him, and he nearly jumped. "Happy birthday, baby brother!" Elizabeth, Matthew’s older sister, poked her head into the room, her emerald eyes, the exact shade of the forest they often hiked, sparkling with warmth. "Need help with anything?" Lizzie, at twenty-five, moved with the calm, commanding presence of a future Luna. Like Matthew, she shared their father's vibrant copper hair and prominent cheekbones, but her eyes held their mother’s gentle yet firm presence, a reflection of her role. Despite her petite frame, her protective nature—both as an older sister and a future Luna—was undeniable. "I'm nervous, Lizzie. What if I don't shift tonight? Or what if I trip and fall face-first in front of everyone?" Matthew's heart quickened, a wave of panic rising in his chest. As the firstborn male of Alpha Daniel and Luna Alicia, he was next in line to inherit the Alpha title. The thought of failing to shift, of failing to lead and protect his pack without a wolf—a first in Silver Moon Pack history—was terrifying. Then there was the other part of tonight: finding his fated mate. The idea was both terrifying and exhilarating. Who would she be? What would she look like? And the most agonizing question: would she like him, or deny him as a few fated mates had been known to do? "Matty, look at me," Lizzie said, her voice dropping to that calm, no-nonsense tone she reserved for him—the one he privately called his 'Luna voice.' (It always made her roll her eyes, but he knew she secretly liked it.) "You will shift, and you won't trip. It will be perfect." She gently turned him from the mirror, her hand firm but gentle on his arm, a familiar, comforting gesture he’d known since childhood. "Worst case, if you don't shift tonight, you'll just keep trying. Shifting takes practice; few wolves get it right on their first try." She reminded him that tonight's initial shift was a mostly private affair, just close family, but it was still a significant celebration. A future Alpha needed his wolf to protect the pack, and this was the first step. Matthew met his sister’s gaze, and the tight knot of panic in his chest began to loosen. He didn't just trust Lizzie; he relied on her, as he always had. Her words were a balm, her calm presence a constant in his often-anxious world. Unlike his friends who bemoaned their older siblings, Matthew had only ever found solace in Lizzie’s steadfast support. She was the one who comforted him through his first broken heart, patiently listening until the ache in his chest subsided. "Thanks, Lizzie, I needed that pep talk." Lizzie straightened his tie with the precise, practiced movements she’d used countless times before, brushing an imaginary speck from his shoulder. "No problem, little brother. That's what I'm here for." Another knock at the door, softer this time, startled them both. "There's our baby," Alicia's warm voice announced. "Happy fifteenth birthday, sweetheart." "Happy birthday, son," Daniel added. Alpha Daniel, known as one of the most powerful Alphas in the region, radiated strength and command, yet with his family, he was calm and gentle. He shared his distinctive copper hair and prominent cheekbones with his children, a proud father and husband who loved his fated mate, Luna Alicia, with everything. Luna Alicia, with her long black hair a striking contrast to her husband and children’s copper locks, was a gentle soul. Her emerald eyes, however, held a hidden commanding presence, showing both the gentleness and the determination necessary for her role. Matthew was deeply proud of his parents; their leadership as Alpha and Luna had positively impacted the pack, leading to more treaties and alliances that benefited not only the Silver Moon Pack but others as well. Both parents looked at Matt and Liz, their gazes filled with pride for their future leaders. "Are you ready, Mattie?" Alicia asked, her motherly concern clear in her tone. Matthew looked at his parents and Lizzie. His nerves still lingered, a faint echo, but after his talk with Lizzie, he felt much more confident. "I'm as ready as I'll ever be."
