CHAPTER THREE: SHE HUNTS MY KIND
Jason POV
Nothing. She uttered absolutely nothing, she was just playing tricks on me. I watched her for some time before her eyes innocently shut down. My palm located her forehead yet again and her body temperature rapidly relaxed to normal, it was as if my touch was soothing her or something close to that.
Relieved a bit, my lips came near her left ear but there were no words flowing out of it. 'Sweet dreams love' I spoke to her in my head like a bloody i***t, praying she heard me. The message I conveyed to her meant was important to me, I didn't actually know where those corny words originated from, they formed in my head suddenly. I just had to learn for myself if she was a...werewolf. I knew it was absurd to even think she was a werewolf but for some strange reason I strongly felt she was, I could feel a bizarre aura oozing from her.
I unblinking stared at her, waiting for her response, maybe a body movement or just another moan, anything to indicate she heard me.
'You can't mindlink a human, you know that right. She's not a werewolf, i'd know if she was, even if mysteriously she was you can't mindlink her unless she was a pack member and she's not,' Demetri didn't slack in stating that fact out but he was right about something. I could only mindlink members of my pack, she couldn't be a pack member.
As Alpha, I was obligated to be familiar with the members of my pack in case rogues or trespasser were amongst them, she wasn't part of my pack. Things would be less difficult if she was a werewolf, I could reject her without the fear of her revealing to the world that I'm a werewolf.
Werewolves were nothing more than mythological stories, humans told their young ones at nighttime. Hunters were the only humans who knew of our existence and they had no interest in disclosing our secret to the world, they rather hunt us down like animals. It was one of the million reasons why werewolves shouldn't have humans as mates, humans are so unpredictable in nature and that scares my kind. They detest us for what we are not who we are, to them we're nothing but heartless monsters that roam the earth seeking to destroy the innocent, they fear what they have no knowledge of.
Foolish humans, we've dwelled amongst them for centuries, scattered all around the globe, posing as one of them. They see us everyday of their human life and we interact with them, If we meant to eradicate them my kind would've done that ages ago, but that's not who we are; well, some of us.
I wore my abandoned clothes as the forest grew unbearably cold, I had to take Demetri's mate to my secret warehouse before dawn sets.
I paused when a gun was discharged, disturbing the serenity of the forest.
"Lena! Lena! where are you!" I was alerted by the movement and distant voices that echoed through the forest followed by another loud gunshot.
Hunters. I needed not to be told twice.
Lena.
I think that's her name.
It sounded too familiar to me, like I've heard it before or even pronounced it with these lips of mine. But why were hunters interested in this fragile human, what connected her to them. My curious but cautious emerald green eyes scanned her whole being in search of the only thing that'll would prove my suspicions.
Looking closely at the nape of her neck, I noticed a dark-inkked devil's trap tattoo on her slender neck. Every shadow hunter I had ever tortured and painfully killed had one on them, it shielded them from vile demons of the earth that sought to possess their bodies, so I was informed.
And she's f*****g one of them; a huntress, she hunts my kind, that's why those rogues were attacking her, they must've known who she was. I made a bloody mistake by saving her, I should've just let them have her.
Hunters were responsible for my father's death. Kaden, my father's beta could testify to that, he watched the massacring of three of the pack's noble members including my father. I had just turned eighteen then but I was too naive and dumb to understand what was happening within my pack, for years my father had kept me far away from the pack's affairs, he believed he did it for my own good, that he saved me and my siblings from having to grow up so fast. He thought he was doing me a favor but instead he was ruining my life, he made me helpless and weak.
Every normal young werewolf shift for the first time at age thirteen to fourteen, I've heard stories about some few gifted werewolves that shift at age nine but I shifted for the first time at age seventeen. It took a week before I started hearing from Demetri and that really frightened the s**t out of me. Kaden taught me how to control my inner wolf, he trained and shaped me into the great alpha I am today, he corrected my father's wrongs.
And when he felt I was ready to take in the tragedy that occurred, he narrated to the entire story to me, it was the first time I ever saw Kaden cry, naturally he acted all tough with me and the other pack members but what he witnessed that night was tragic enough to break him down in tears.
According to Kaden, they came to them with a special proposal, the hunters needed their help to kill and capture a pack of rogues that were butchering humans and stealing their body parts for reasons best known to them. He warned my father that trusting humans who were hunters wasn't such a great idea, but my father as strong headed as he was, turned down his beta's advice and agreed to lend them his help only on one condition. They would stop hunting members of our pack which their leader freely agreed to. Over a grand banquet they shook hands and signed a peace treaty to seal the deal my pack soon came to regret, my father had no idea that he was stepping right into their death trap.
Hunters set a trap for my pack and they fell into it, at night the hunters called them to have an emergency meeting in the forest, and when they got there they were ambushed by them. Even with my pack outnumbered and unprepared for war, they still put on a great fight to the death, they've could easily won if they had the numbers on their side. Kaden told me that there was no sign of their leader that night, he didn't have the balls to show up and fight like a man.
My father was beheaded while saving Kaden from a silver arrow straight to his heart, he died the way he wished; a hero. I pleaded with Kaden to reveal everything he knew about the hunters that dared to betray my pack but Kaden wouldn't tell me anything, he made a promise to my father to always protect and keep me from making wrong decisions like going after the hunters that murdered my father. My father trusted humans blindly and it cost him his life, I'd be a fool to make the same mistakes he did.
The voices grew louder and louder by the minute, the hunters were rapidly gaining on her location, it was only a matter of time that they discover where she was. I carried her in my arms bridal style, so as not to worsen her delicate condition. I didn't want to hurt her, not yet. I started towards the direction of my BWM in long strides, I couldn't apply my wolf speed not while she was in my arms, I had to be gentle with her.
Gorgeous. She was beautiful and I knew it. I stood lost in her beauty. Even fast asleep her beauty was enticing and alluring to me, I liked having her in my arms, it just felt right. My lustful eyes began to roam her entire body but I snapped out of it and scolded myself for my reckless behavior.
'You care for Mate, I know you do, ' Demetri taunted. I being sensible gave him the silent treatment just to end the discussion. He was wrong though, I could never care for this cursed human and I was going to prove it by rejecting her.
"Drop the girl and slowly turn around!" I heard a man with a husky voice say audibly enough that I froze in my tracks.
"We won't ask you twice!" A different voice chimed in, anger establishing in his voice. Hunters finally found us. Lowering her calmly to the forest floor, I veered to face three middle aged hunters, all in thermal short sleeve shirts and cargo pants, aiming their long rifles at me. No doubt the bullets were made of pure silver and wolfsbane. The hunter in the middle, the one that seemed in charge inspected Lena from head to toe before his eyes careful moved to me.
"So, you're a werewolf " He blurted out, tightening his fingers around his rifle as if about to pull the trigger, disgust clear in his face. I nodded to his question, there was no point denying it, my blood stained face had ratted me out.
Not taking his eyes off me, he motioned to the other two hunters to retrieve Lena which they did at once. I wanted to shift into my wolf and stop them from taking her but it wasn't going to play out nice, it was way too risky, the chances of her getting killed in the process were high. I couldn't put her life in danger, Demetri would never permit it.
Before my eyes they took her and vanished into the forest, leaving me alone with their leader.
"And the dead werewolf not so far away, was that you," I bobbed my head, my hand slowly located my back pocket when he wasn't noticing. I had a plan to grab my pocket knife the minute he was distracted and put him to sleep, permanently.
"Hope you like cages, because you're gonna live in one, I'm so gonna be double promoted if I turn you in," He cheerfully announced his plans, advancing towards me. The clown planned on taking me captive all by himself without waiting for his backup to arrive, he didn't know I wasn't his regular type of werewolf. I'm one of the biggest, baddest werewolves of all of New Orleans, even alphas fear me and that was a fact indeed, his lack of brains made me extra confident.
"Now hands on your head and get down on your knees, don't make me kill you," He threatened. As a quick response to his empty threat, I took a bold step forward, hand into my back pocket, daring him to discharge his weapon. As soon as he fired, I dodged in time, grabbed my pocketknife from my back pocket and forwarded it into his neck.
Blood gushed from his neck and I smirked at the mere sight of it. He dropped his rifle as both his hands rounded his bloody neck, I could see shock in his widened eyes while he fell to the ground.
Wasting not another second, I dived into the forest looking for her, there was no sign of her. Demetri and I tried picking up her scent like before, but her scent was gone, vanished into thin air. They must've left the forest. Curse my luck! I was back to square one. How on earth was I going to find her again.
