The honeymoon was a secret.
Kael had planned everything—the destination, the arrangements, the surprises. All I knew was that we were leaving that night, and I wasn't allowed to pack anything.
"Is this your way of telling me I'm going to be naked for the entire trip?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as I watched him zip up a small bag.
He turned, that slow, devastating smile spreading across his face.
"Would that be a problem?"
My cheeks flushed. "No," I admitted. "But I'd like to know where we're going."
"Somewhere private," he said, crossing the room to wrap his arms around my waist. "Somewhere no one can find us. Somewhere we can just... exist."
I tilted my head up to meet his golden eyes.
"That sounds perfect."
---
The private jet was a masterpiece of luxury.
White leather seats. Crystal chandeliers. A bedroom in the back with a bed large enough for five people. Champagne chilling in a bucket. Roses scattered across every surface.
I stared at the bed.
"You're spoiling me."
Kael appeared behind me, his hands settling on my hips.
"I'm spoiling you?" He pressed a kiss to my shoulder. "Elara, you saved my life. You saved this city. You saved me from myself. This is nothing."
I turned to face him, wrapping my arms around his neck.
"You're going to make me cry."
"Good." He smiled. "I like your crying face."
"You're impossible."
"Impossibly in love with you."
He kissed me—soft, sweet, full of promise. And as the plane lifted off into the night sky, I felt the fire in my chest burn warm.
---
The island was paradise.
White sand beaches that stretched for miles. Turquoise water so clear I could see the fish swimming beneath the surface. A private villa nestled in the hills, surrounded by lush jungle and cascading waterfalls.
We spent our days exploring.
Swimming in hidden coves. Hiking through the jungle to discover secret caves. Watching the sunset from the top of a cliff, our fingers intertwined, our hearts beating as one.
And we spent our nights in each other's arms.
The sounds of the ocean lulling us to sleep. The stars blazing overhead. The warmth of his body pressed against mine.
For the first time in my life, I felt something I'd never felt before.
Peace.
---
One night, we were lying on the beach, watching the stars.
Kael's arm was wrapped around me, his heart beating against my back. The waves whispered against the shore. The moon cast silver light across the water.
"Elara."
I looked up. "Hmm?"
"I've been thinking."
"About what?"
He was quiet for a moment. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
"Kael—"
"Not another ring," he said quickly, a smile tugging at his lips. "I promise. Just—open it."
I took the box. My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a pendant.
A tiny golden phoenix, its wings spread wide in flight. A ruby heart nestled in its chest, catching the moonlight and glowing like a tiny flame.
"It's beautiful," I whispered.
"Turn it over."
I did.
On the back, engraved in delicate script:
Rise from the ashes. Always.
I felt the tears sliding down my cheeks.
"Kael—"
"You are my fire," he said softly, sitting up to face me. "You are my home. You are my everything."
I looked up at him. His golden eyes were blazing—not with heat, but with love.
"When I was lost, you found me. When I was broken, you healed me. When I thought I was nothing, you showed me I was everything." He reached for my hand, his fingers intertwining with mine. "I didn't know what love was until I met you. I didn't know what it meant to truly live until you burned your way into my life."
I was crying now. Tears streaming down my face.
"I love you, Elara. Not because you saved me. Not because you're the phoenix. Not because of any of that." He pressed his forehead to mine. "I love you because you're you. Because you make me want to be better. Because you make me feel like I'm worthy of happiness."
I couldn't speak. I could barely breathe.
"Will you stay with me?" he asked. "Not because of a contract. Not because you have to. But because you want to. Always."
I threw my arms around him.
"Yes," I whispered. "Yes, Kael. Always."
---
The pendant settled against my chest like it had always belonged there.
I touched it, feeling the warmth of the ruby against my skin.
"I love it," I said. "I love you."
He smiled—that slow, devastating smile that never failed to make my heart race.
"I love you too, little phoenix."
He kissed me. And the world faded away.
---
The next morning, I woke to the sound of waves and the warmth of Kael's arms around me.
I turned in his embrace, looking at his sleeping face.
Golden eyes closed. Dark hair tousled. Scar prominent against his jaw.
He looked peaceful. Happy.
He looked like mine.
I reached up, tracing the line of his jaw with my finger. His eyes fluttered open.
"Morning," I whispered.
He smiled. "Morning, Mrs. Draven."
I felt the butterflies in my stomach.
"Mrs. Draven," I repeated. "I like the sound of that."
"Good," he murmured, pulling me closer. "Because you're going to hear it for the rest of your life."
He kissed me—slow, deep, full of promises.
And the fire in my chest burned warm.
---
The rest of the honeymoon was a blur of sun and sand and love.
We swam in the ocean. Danced on the beach. Made love under the stars.
We talked about the future—our future.
"Children?" Kael asked one night, his voice tentative.
I looked at him.
"Do you want children?"
He was quiet for a moment.
"I never thought I would," he admitted. "I never thought I could be a father. Not after what my father was. But with you—" He reached for my hand. "With you, I think I could. I think I'd want to."
I smiled.
"Me too."
---
The last night on the island, we stood on the balcony of our villa, watching the sun set over the ocean.
"I don't want to leave," I said.
"Neither do I."
"Can we stay here forever?"
Kael laughed. "I wish."
I leaned into him, feeling his arms wrap around me.
"Thank you," I said softly. "For all of this. For giving me a chance. For loving me."
He pressed a kiss to my hair.
"Thank you for loving me back."
I looked up at him.
"Always," I said.
He smiled.
"Always."
---
The fire in my chest burned warm.
Safe.
Home.
Forever.
