The weeks after the final battle were a blur of reconstruction and recovery.
Aethel City was in ruins—but the people were determined to rise from the ashes. Just like me.
I spent my days helping with the rebuilding. Lifting stones. Clearing debris. Holding the hands of those who had lost everything. I worked alongside the pack, alongside the citizens, alongside anyone who needed a hand.
And every night, I came home to Kael.
To Aurora.
To the family I'd fought so hard to protect.
---
"You're exhausted," Kael said one evening, finding me in the library. I was surrounded by plans and blueprints, my eyes burning with exhaustion.
"I'm fine," I said, but my voice betrayed me.
He crossed the room, his hands finding my shoulders. "You're not fine. You're running on empty."
"I can't stop. There's too much to do. Too many people who need—"
"Elara." His voice was firm. "Look at me."
I did. Those golden eyes. That fierce, beautiful face.
"The city will still be here tomorrow," he said. "The pack will still be here. But you—" He cupped my face. "You need to rest. You need to heal."
"I don't have time to heal."
"You're making time." He kissed my forehead. "Tonight, you're going to sleep. Tomorrow, you're going to rest. And the day after that—" He smiled. "We'll figure it out together."
I wanted to argue. But the exhaustion was too deep.
"Fine," I said. "But only because you're impossible."
"Impossibly in love with you."
---
The next morning, I woke to the sound of birdsong and the warmth of sunlight streaming through the windows.
For the first time in weeks, I felt... rested.
I stretched, my muscles aching in a good way. Kael was beside me, his arm wrapped around my waist, his breathing slow and even.
I watched him sleep.
His dark hair was tousled, his jaw relaxed. He looked younger like this—less burdened, less weighed down by the world.
I reached out, tracing the line of his scar.
His eyes fluttered open.
"Good morning," he murmured.
"Good morning."
He smiled—that slow, devastating smile.
"Did you actually sleep?"
"I did."
"Good." He pulled me closer. "Because you need it."
"I know."
He kissed me—soft, sweet, full of love.
And for the first time in a long time, I felt at peace.
---
Later that day, I visited my father.
He was living in a small cottage on the outskirts of the city—the same cottage he'd been in since the rebellion. But now it was different. Now it was home.
"Elara!" He greeted me with a warm hug, his eyes shining with joy. "I was hoping you'd come."
"Of course I came." I sat down across from him. "How are you?"
"I'm good." He smiled. "Better than I've been in years. Mira is coming over for dinner tonight. We're making progress."
I felt a warmth spread through my chest.
"I'm so happy for you, Dad."
"I'm happy for you too." He reached for my hand. "You're a mother now, Elara. A wife. A leader. You've become everything I always knew you could be."
I blinked back tears.
"I couldn't have done it without you."
"No," he said. "You would have done it anyway. You're a Verath. You're a phoenix. You burn brighter than anyone I've ever known."
---
Aurora was waiting for me when I returned to the Spire.
"Mommy!" She ran into my arms, her tiny body warm and full of energy. "Daddy said we're going to the park! Is it true?"
I laughed.
"It's true."
"Yay!" She grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the door. "Come on, come on, come on!"
Kael was waiting for us at the entrance, a smile on his face.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Ready," I said.
---
The park was beautiful.
Green grass. Blooming flowers. Children laughing and playing in the sunshine.
We sat on a bench, watching Aurora chase butterflies.
"She's so happy," I said. "So innocent. She doesn't know what we've been through."
Kael wrapped his arm around me.
"And she never will. That's the gift we gave her. A life without fear."
I leaned into him.
"Thank you," I said softly.
"For what?"
"For everything. For saving me. For loving me. For giving me this life."
He pressed a kiss to my hair.
"You saved yourself," he said. "I just held your hand while you did it."
I smiled.
"Together."
"Together."

That night, the pack gathered at the Spire.
It was a celebration—of survival, of healing, of everything we'd overcome.
Dorian was there, laughing with Cassia. Lyra was quiet, but I saw the smile playing at her lips. Riven was watching the crowd with a rare softness in his eyes. Finn was dancing with a girl I didn't recognize, his grin wide and carefree.
Sera was there with Nathaniel, their children running around the room. My father was there with Mira, their hands intertwined.
And I was there with Kael.
My family.
My home.
---
"We did it," I said, looking around the room.
Kael followed my gaze.
"We did."
"All of us."
"All of us."
I turned to look at him. Those golden eyes. That fierce, beautiful face.
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too."
He kissed me—slow, deep, full of promises.
And the fire in my chest burned warm.
---
The fire in my chest burned warm.
Safe.
Home.
Forever.
Healing.
