Caden was so confused and shocked.
After what happened at the cafe, all he wanted to do was go home, shower and rest. Maybe even watch a movie or read a book. But the moment he saw his blind date standing out his door, he knew his whole day was ruined.
Her name was Veronica.
Although she hadn't introduced herself, his friend had done all the introduction before he agreed to the date. What his friend had failed to mention was that Veronica was a haughty woman.
She heard him approaching and she turned to look at him. She frowned. “Caden, are you stalking me?” She asked, scoffing.
“What? Why would I do that?”
“Then why are you here? Did you follow me from the cafe? Is this what this is? You can't let me go?” Veronica asked.
Caden hated that she was assuming all these. He didn't feel a thing for her. “Veronica, what are you doing here?” he asked again.
It wasn't until she saw him bring out the keys from his pocket that she realized what was happening. “Wait, is this your house? Is your mother Margaret?” She asked, raising her brows.
“Yes, to both questions.” Caden replied.
She huffed, flipping her hair over her shoulder. “That’s unfortunate. If I had known I wouldn't have shown up. Your mother invited me over for dinner. Apparently, she’s good friends with my mother. Isn’t that sweet?”
Veronica was such a sarcastic person. Caden sighed. He remembered his mother mentioning something about a guest coming. That was why she wanted him to come home on time. But he couldn't have expected that his blind date was the woman his mother invited.
Fate was such a cruel thing.
“I didn’t realize you were the one coming,” he said. He walked towards the door amd unlocked it.
“Oh, stop acting like you're so modest. I saw the way you looked at me earlier. It was love at first sight, wasn’t it?” Veronica asked.
He raised his eyebrows at her. “Did you just say love at first sight? I was late and you threw water on me.”
Veronica waved it off. “Things like that happen but I know what I saw, Caden. You just couldn’t take your eyes off me. I can't blame you. Men like you always fall for women like me that are out of your reach.”
Caden opened the door and they both walked in. Veronica took off her coat and passed it to him without asking. He hung it on the coat hanger.
He watched her catwalk with her heels into his house. He took off his own shoes and put on some slippers before following after her. He couldn't ignore what she had said outside, so he asked, “What do you mean by men like me?”
She eyed him up and down. “You know, men who aren’t in my league. Just look at yourself, you’re a nurse. You probably make money that's just enough to pay rent and maybe buy a decent car. But that's all you can do.”
They were literally the basic necessities but it wasn't enough for her. “What exactly do you think about that?”
Veronica sighed. “Look, Caden, I’m not saying it’s bad to be a nurse. You just have to understand that someone like me needs more. I can’t be with a guy who can’t give me the things I want.”
He didn't ask her what she wanted but she began to list them. “I need a car like a porsche, I want weekly trips to the spa, expensive jewelry, and of course, gifts. If you think you can manage that, maybe this thing between us could work.”
“What thing between us? Do you think I’d spend all my money just to be with you?”
Veronica gave a smile. “Oh, come on. Someone like you wouldn’t be able to land a woman like me any other way.”
He laughed, “You’ve got some nerve coming to my house and saying all that.” Caden wondered where his mother was. Hr couldn't deal with this woman. She was his mother's guest after all.
The moment his mother shows up, he was going to abandon Veronica and go to his room until the night was over. He was too exhausted for so much drama in one day.
Veronica was having fun thought and she wasn't going to just let him go so easily. She smirked amd stepped closer to him. “Come on, don't be like that. I was only trying to help. I know you probably feel like less of a man next to me, but I can help you. I can shape you into the kind of man who can be with me.”
Caden removed his arm from her grip, irritated. He had never been this insulted before in his entire life. “I’m not interested in being your man if that's what it means. If you’re looking for someone to spoil you unnecessarily, you’ve got the wrong guy.”
“Don’t be foolish, Caden. You’re just a nurse. Who else is going to want you?”
Before Caden could say anything, the doorbell rang.. He frowned, wondering who else could be showing up at this hour.
Veronica raised an eyebrow. “Are you expecting someone?”
Caden shook his head, “I don't know if my mum invited someone else.” He said honestly.
He walked over to the door and unlocked. There standing outside was none other than Anna. But, she wasn't alone.
There was another lady, maybe her assistant, standing next to her. She was holding gifts. Anna looked beautiful. She wasn't wearing that white dress from earlier today. Instead, She was wearing a two piece outfit that hugged her curves nicely.
Veronica walked closer to them and narrowed her eyes at Anna. Caden was too stunned to say anything. He just let them into the house. Veronica was annoyed because Anna walked in like she owned the place.
“Caden, I'm so sorry to interrupt but I'm here for something very important.” Anna began.
“Anna, what are you doing here? How did you find me?” He asked.
“I have my ways,” she replied. “You know how I told you I went to the cafe to make an important decision and I ended up meeting you?” Caden nodded. “Well, I've made the decision.”
Caden blinked. “What does any of that have to do with me?”
Veronica spoke up. “And who the hell are you?”
Anna seemed to notice her for the first time. She gave her a curt nod and looked back at Caden. “What I'm about to say may come as a shock but, I've come here to marry you.”
Caden felt his jaw drop.
