Chapter 7: They Were Already Inside

1228 Words
The warning came too late. I felt it before anyone said a word. A disturbance. Not from outside the territory. From within. I stopped mid-step. Ethan noticed immediately. “You feel that,” he said. “Yes.” But this was different from before. Not the deep presence in the forest. Not the pressure that responded to me. This felt… Wrong. Sharp. Hidden. Moving. The pack had not noticed yet. They were still dispersing, still whispering, still trying to make sense of what had just happened between me and the Alpha. That was their mistake. “They are here,” Ethan said quietly. “No,” I replied. “They are already inside.” The words had barely left my lips when it happened. A scream cut through the air. Not distant. Close. Too close. Everything stopped. Heads turned. Bodies tensed. The second scream followed. This one shorter. Cut off. The Alpha moved first. Fast. Direct. The warriors followed instantly. Training took over. Instinct. Order. I did not wait. I ran. Ethan kept up beside me without effort. We reached the edge of the inner grounds in seconds. And what I saw… Did not make sense. One of the pack members was on the ground. Not unconscious. Not dead. Shaking. Like his body did not belong to him. Another stood over him. But something was wrong. Very wrong. His posture was off. Too stiff. Too controlled. Like something was wearing him. Not being him. “Step back,” the Alpha ordered sharply. The warriors moved immediately, forming a circle. Containing. Watching. The man on the ground convulsed again. His eyes rolled back. Then snapped open. But they were not his. Too dark. Too empty. “What is happening to him?” someone asked. No one answered. Because no one knew. The standing one turned slowly. Too slowly. His movements unnatural. Delayed. Then his head tilted slightly. And he smiled. Not like himself. Not like anyone I had ever seen. Cold. Detached. Unfamiliar. “They see it now,” he said. His voice was wrong. Layered. Like two voices speaking at once. A ripple of unease moved through the pack. The Alpha stepped forward. “Who are you?” he demanded. The smile widened. “You already know the answer,” the voice replied. No. We did not. But I had a feeling. A bad one. Ethan stepped closer to me. “This is not natural,” he said. “I know.” The man on the ground suddenly went still. Completely still. Then slowly… He began to rise. Not with effort. Not with struggle. Like something was pulling him up. Controlling him. Two bodies. One presence. The realization hit instantly. “They are not alone,” I said. The Alpha’s gaze snapped toward me. “What do you mean?” “They are being controlled.” Silence. Then the standing one laughed. Low. Amused. “Controlled?” he repeated. “That is a simple way to describe it.” The second one fully stood now. Both of them facing us. Perfectly aligned. Perfectly still. “You think this is an attack?” the voice continued. “It is not.” “Then what is it?” the Alpha asked. The answer came without hesitation. “A message.” The air tightened. Every instinct in my body sharpened. Because messages like this… Were never harmless. “What message?” the Alpha demanded. The two of them moved at the same time. One step forward. The warriors reacted instantly. But they did not attack. They hesitated. Because these were still their own. Their pack. Their people. That hesitation… Was the mistake. The two bodies moved faster. Not like wolves. Not like humans. Something else. One of the warriors was grabbed before he could react. Held. Not attacked. Just restrained. The movement stopped instantly. Controlled. Precise. “We are not here to fight,” the voice said again. “Not yet.” The Alpha’s voice dropped. “Release him.” A pause. Then slowly… They did. The warrior stumbled back, breathing hard, shaken but unharmed. The message was clear. They could have done more. They chose not to. That made it worse. “We came to confirm something,” the voice continued. Their heads turned slightly. Both of them. At the same time. Toward me. The entire space shifted. Every eye followed. Every breath held. My pulse slowed. Not fear. Focus. Of course. This was about me. It had always been about me. “You,” the voice said. Not loudly. But clearly. “We felt you.” I did not move. “You should not exist like this.” The words landed cold. “You should not be awake.” Silence followed. Heavy. Unavoidable. The Alpha stepped slightly in front. Protective. Or controlling. Hard to tell. “She is part of this pack,” he said. “Then your pack is already compromised.” That hit harder than anything else. Because it was not just an attack. It was a declaration. “You entered our territory,” the Alpha said. “You think we would not notice?” The voice almost sounded amused. “You noticed too late.” A chill moved through the space. Because they were right. They had already been here. Inside. Watching. Choosing their moment. “How long?” I asked. The question cut through everything. Both of them looked at me again. At the same time. Longer this time. “Long enough,” the voice replied. Not an answer. But enough. Ethan’s hand tightened slightly near mine. “They have been here,” he whispered. “I know.” Watching. Learning. Waiting. “For what?” I asked. The smile returned. Wider this time. “Until you were ready.” My chest tightened slightly. Not fear. Recognition. “So this was never about the pack,” I said. “No.” “Then what is it about?” A pause. Then the answer came. Clear. Final. “You.” Silence fell. Complete. The weight of it settled over everyone. Because now… There was no misunderstanding. This was not random. This was not chance. This was planned. “You are not safe here,” the voice continued. “Not from us.” The ground beneath my feet pulsed faintly. A response. Instinctive. “You should not have come,” I said quietly. The two bodies stilled. Then tilted their heads slightly. In sync. “And yet,” the voice replied, “we are already here.” The air snapped. Not loudly. But sharply. Then both bodies dropped. At the same time. Unconscious. Lifeless. Empty. The presence was gone. Just like that. Silence returned. But this time… It was worse. Because now everyone understood. This was not over. This was just the beginning. The Alpha’s gaze slowly shifted to me. Different now. Not just authority. Not just control. Concern. Real concern. “What did they mean?” someone whispered. No one answered. Because the answer was already clear. I exhaled slowly. “They are coming,” I said. Ethan looked at me. “Yes.” “And next time…” My gaze lifted toward the dark forest beyond the territory. “They will not send a message.” The wind moved through the trees. Cold. Unfamiliar. And somewhere out there… Something was waiting. Not watching anymore. Preparing.
