One day before the new semester started, Choi So-dong returned to her school in Asan; since then, Choi Hun-ae missed her everyday. Compared with the first semester during her undergraduate period, the second was with more numerous and difficult courses; to ensure herself would gain excellent scores, therefore, Choi Hun-ae had to spend more time in learning these courses, while the chance of personally meeting her lover became rarer.

As a result, Choi Hun-ae dreamed of Choi So-dong more frequently, almost everyday. Most of these dreams shared a feature: being about having s*x. Howbeit such dreams were not completely pleasant. After waking up, Choi Hun-ae was able to remember her worry during these dreams, as she was afraid that others would know their relationship and therefore spurn them.

Compared with Choi Hun-ae, Choi Yoo-pyeong was much more footloose.

Choi Yoo-pyeong’s legal wife was a classmate of during his undergraduate period in America; after marrying him, she gave birth to three children for him in total. Despite her contribution, he did not sincerely love her; contrarily, he was hell-bent on a mistress who was more than ten years younger than him. His home in Mapo District, for example, was for his mistress. After some journalists knew and reported this detail, he admitted:

“Exactly, I don’t love my original wife any more. Now I’m preparing for the divorce, after which I’ll immediately get my genuine lover for my wife.”

As a junior in the clan, Choi Hun-ae never commented the conflicts among seniors, regarding any comment as impolite. However, she was jealous of Choi Yoo-pyeong, who could publicly talk about his marriage. Contrary with him, Choi Hun-ae never dared to declare that she would form a new family with Choi So-dong.

In the evening of September 21, 2019, after having supper, Choi Hun-ae was planning to carry the tableware into the kitchen and wash it; suddenly, a chat software of her mobile phone rang. Wondering whether it was Choi So-dong that wanted to chat with her, she picked up the phone, looked at its screen and therefore saw: it was Choi Myeon-ae, her sister who was three years younger than her.

“Hi, Myeon-ae, what’s up?” asked Choi Hun-ae.

“Nothing else but missing you, elder sister,” answered Choi Myeon-ae.

“I miss you, too, Myeon-ae,” Choi Hun-ae told this younger sister.

Although Choi Hun-ae’s family members, as well as herself, were not citizens of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), when they were living in this country, they could spend Chinese official holidays, similar with what Chinese people did.

Especially, October 1, 2019 would be the 70th Anniversary of National Day of the PRC. This was why Choi Myeon-ae said: “You know, elder sister, Chinese people treasure an anniversary very much, when its number is a multiple of 10. To celebrate the 70th anniversary, in my opinion, the government of China should give a longer holiday.”

“How long should it be, in your opinion?” Choi Hun-ae asked.

“One month.”

Choi Myeon-ae seemed to be so serious when speaking out this sentence; however, Choi Hun-ae laughed and said: “It’s impossible! As China is developing, not developed yet, what will happen to her, if her citizens have such a long holiday? The economy will be damaged.”

Choi Myeon-ae also laughed and said: “Of course, elder sister. I was only joking.” Right after this, she continued to say: “But another thing is true: dad will lead us to Xinjiang to spend this holiday for the National Day of the PRC.”

“Great!” replied Choi Hun-ae. “Regretfully, I can’t accompany with you.”

This was not surprising, as South Koreans in their motherland did not spend the National Day of another political state. For example, although America was the most influential to South Korea after World War II, the latter never set July 4 (American national day) as a legal holiday.

Moreover, as October 1, 2019 was Tuesday, a working day in South Korea, Choi Hun-ae and her classmates must attend class at school. However, Choi Hun-ae could not help guessing: “Mom, dad and my siblings must be travelling in Xinjiang happily now. Although Uighur separatist forces have ever launched many attacks in the past, during these years, Xinjiang has become much safer.”

Choi Hun-ae desired to ask Choi So-dong to travel in many places in the world with her; regretfully, if they did so, others were probable to wonder: “Why do they necessarily travel together? It seems to mean that they are not only distant cousins, doesn’t it? In other words, they are overly intimate.”

Besides other human beings’ possible opposition, another problem had ever injured and even frightened Choi Hun-ae: she was a Christian, namely a believer of Christianity, according to which homosexuals were against God’s will and therefore would be imprisoned in Hell. Choi Hun-ae, certainly, hoped to go to Heaven after she passed away in the future; nonetheless, if the precondition was to abandon Choi So-dong, she preferred to go to Hell.

This was why she told Choi So-dong in the middle of October 2019, when they met each other in Asan again: “You’re a devil. Because of you, I can even betray God’s will.”

“If the devil will go to Hell just right now, what will you do?” Choi So-dong asked and could not help laughing.

“I’ll go with you just right now,” Choi Hun-ae answered without the least hesitation, causing Choi So-dong to weep and murmur: “You love me so deeply, mommy. Although I have already known this fact, I’m still moved after hearing it again.”

“OK, as you know it, reward me a kiss,” demanded Choi Hun-ae. As a result, Choi So-dong, who smiled through tears, met this requirement.
