“Where do you think you’re going, Mrs. Hernandez?” A gruff voice questions me.
I sigh and turn around giving my best confused look. A huge man stands before me dressed in a black suit, his eyes showing curiosity about my movements. For some reason unknown to me, the man addresses me like I am Luca’s wife. Maybe that was what Luca told his men and regardless of how dirty I feel by the title, I will use it to my advantage. I bite my lip and lie through my teeth.
“I was just going to get some breakfast for myself and my husband. We didn’t have any before we came in to work and since he’s busy I thought I would pop out and get him something to eat before his day gets hectic.”
“The building has a cafeteria though. You don’t need to stress yourself and go out.” He gives me an alternative.
“Oh, well, Luca doesn’t like eating some foods. As you might know he’s very peculiar about what he wants.” I mention, standing firm on my words.
The man eyes me for some time before he places a hand on his hips and frowns at me.
“You need to go back to your office ma’am.” He says in a no nonsense tone.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me. One of the staff can be sent to get you your breakfast if that’s still what you want but you cannot leave the premises.”
I scoff, giving my best irritated expression.
“What do you mean by that? I want to get the food myself. Why am I being stopped from doing that?”
“Ma’am.” He says with an arm outstretched before I cut him off. The man was onto me and I had one last card to play before he carted me back to the office I was assigned to stay in. I had to play my part.
“No. As a matter of fact, what is your name?” I query, seizing him up.
“Mark Grayson.” He answers without any hesitation.
“Mark. Do you know who I am because it seems like after you called my name, it left your memory so let me refresh it for you. I am Emilia Hernandez. Your employer’s wife. And if I say that I want to go out and get my husband some food then I’ll bloody do it.” I take a breath and shout at him again, pointing in his direction this time to show how pissed off I was. I’m not necessarily a bitchy wife but if this was what was going to help me get out of here then I would do it.
“If you try to stop me again I will make sure that you will be fired and left without any prospects whatsoever in the security business or whatever it is you think you do.” I finish, my brows furrowing and my lips downturned making me look like a woman scorned.
I glance around the lobby to see some people staring at me. With an exhale I drop my finger and compose myself. It seems like I had acted out my part too well. I look up at the man and raise an eyebrow expecting him to reconsider his actions and let me walk out of here scot free but to my surprise he frowns and places a hand on my shoulder before leaning closer to me to avoid anyone hearing us.
“I know who you are to Mr. Luca and he himself ordered me not to let you out of the building.”
I gulp, my throat suddenly feeling dry.
“What?” I question, shock coating my features.
“I think it’s time you return back to your office Mrs. Hernandez. Mr. Luca wouldn’t want you causing a scene here.” The man whispers back to me, his eyes showing his determination to drag me back upstairs if I put up any resistance.
With my plan shot down, I quickly switch tactics and choose to do something else. Something out of character. I try to run. I turn my back to him and try to make it to the door that is three feet from me. Unfortunately for me, his grip on my shoulder strengthens and my fingers fall short of the door. He holds me in place, a frown no longer on his now stoic face.
“Mrs. Hernandez. Please.” Mark says shortly.
I look at the people around me, considering if I should shout and beg for help but it occurs to me that if the supposed head of the company was working for Luca and even the security was keeping me from escaping then it meant that all these people in here watching me, were probably on Luca’s team. It’s even highly likely that they were all in the same mafia family with him. I truly am trapped.
The realization hits me hard and my shoulders slump in defeat. I turn back to Mark and cave in.
“Fine.”
Mark lets go of my shoulder but goes to stand behind me so that I don’t go back on my words. Defeated step after step, we go back into the building and towards the elevator. In a few seconds, I am back in my office, the door closed behind me and my head in my hands.
“Fuck.” I groan out loud, angry that my once foolproof plan has gone down the drain. It takes no time for my door to open up and a familiar face to walk into the room. I raise my head up and glare at none other than the man who put me in this situation. Luca Hernandez.
He walks up to my desk in a calm but deceiving demeanor and watches me for a moment before he speaks.
“You tried to run.”
I say nothing, not having the energy to succumb to his statements. Once he notices that I don’t move to reply to him, he frowns and sits down on the seat opposite from me.
“Speak or you’ll be punished. You tried to run when I said that you shouldn’t. Why disobey me when you clearly can’t escape?” He questions me with a c****d head like I was some enigma he was trying to understand.
“What did you expect? You kidnapped me.” I shouted at him, getting up from my seat.
“I bought you. There’s a difference.” He deadpans, frustrating me even more but I was not going to let that stop me. I am exploding with anger and if all I could do was for him to hear me then I would scream my lungs out until he did.
“You took me from a freaking auction. You paid money for my head and I understand that you’re in the mafia and into some shady business but if you can’t see that what you’re doing is wrong then I wonder what sort of person you are. I wonder if you even have any decency as a human being.”
“I never said that I was a good guy now did I?” Luca speaks with a small smirk on his face, disregarding what I had to say about his morality. I take a step back realizing that the man before me wasn’t normal. Hell, he smiles when I tell him that he essentially kidnapped me. Who in the world does that? Killers and psychopaths that’s who.
“Oh, and I definitely didn’t give you the permission to curse now did I?” He adds, raising an eyebrow at me while he scolds me like a child.
I pull at my hair and scream, angry at everything and unable to take it anymore. My mind swirls with uncertainty at my predicament and it even worsens when I feel Luca’s hands on me, pulling me closer to him. When did he get up? I flinch and pull back but he holds me steady, my face inches away from his.
“You’re having a bad time acclimatizing to your current situation. This was expected but you do need to know that you have no way out. I’ll excuse you from your punishment for today because it’s only been some days but you need to behave. If not I will not be as cavalier as I have been in the past.”
I look into his eyes and see that he isn’t playing around. His normally playful eyes are stone cold and almost dead as he speaks. He really is serious about me accepting my place with him sooner rather than later. I say nothing when he pulls away from me and takes a step back.
“I’m going back to work. Stay put Lia. I don’t want to have to resort to worser things.” Luca warns me before he moves over to the other side of the room and disappears behind the door, leaving me alone with my thoughts and my decrepit feelings.
I rest on the wall behind me and slide to the floor, my eyes watering up with tears and my defiance wavering. This is the second time I have tried to run away. This was the easiest one. The one closer to my freedom and even though Luca hadn’t physically chained or locked me away since he bought me, it felt that way. The tears fall and I cry until I feel numb knowing that this was the only chance I had to see my family again. Knowing that as of this moment my life belonged to Luca. I was his.
