"Daughter..?" I whispered as I backed away from everyone. He never referred to me as his daughter. Always his niece. He was always very specific. So this was weird. Something wasn't right. "Nikki, I think we need to go have a talk somewhere. Along with Debbie. Josh, this pertains to you as well, seeing as you're twins," Uncle Jonathon replied.
I stood there stunned for a second, then I turned and bolted towards the packhouse, running to one of the guest rooms that wasn't being used on the second floor. Nothing made sense. He was saying it as if I was his daughter. That Josh and I are actually twins. I paced back and forth, trying to figure out how this was possible, and eventually I punched the mirror as it was the closest thing. Xander quickly grabbed me and pulled me to the bathroom. I hadn't even realized he had entered.
Xander POV
I watched Nikki tear off towards the packhouse, and I turned to Alpha Jonathon, looking for an explanation. He looked conflicted and hurt at the same time. Josh looked just as confused as Nikki, and I didn't know what to make of it.
"Well? Is she really your daughter?" I finally asked Alpha Jonathon. I just wanted an answer.
"You told her?! We agreed we would tell her together!" Luna Debbie screamed at the alpha as she walked up on us. Well that confirms it.
"I didn't mean to, it just kind of happened, Deb. Jackson here threatened her and it slipped. Lucian, get this bastard off my land. Alpha Xander, yes, she and Josh are twins. Siblings. My kids. Mine, and Debbie's," Jonathon answered, looking defeated. I heard all I needed for now and ran into the house.
I followed her scent to the second floor and to a random guest room. I opened the door and heard glass break. When I looked, her hand was bleeding as she punched the mirror. Without thinking I grabbed her and took her into the bathroom and started rinsing her hand, pulling out any pieces of glass that I could. Normally, I'd yell at her for hurting herself, but she was so confused, I don't think she even realized she was doing it.
When I was finished, I rinsed her hand once more and noticed her cuts were gone. Werewolf healing abilities, thank goddess. I looked at her face and she was looking down, clearly still upset with everything. I lifted her chin up with my finger and gently kissed her lips, until she relaxed and settled down. When I pulled away she looked into my eyes and smiled.
"Xander, I'm so sorry… I don't know what happened. I freaked out and lost it," she whispered as she started to cry. I reached out and brushed her tears away.
"No, my little one, it's okay. Don't cry. I'm here, and you don't need to apologize at all," I reassured her as she buried her face in my chest. She was sitting on the counter and still only came up to my chest. I chucked at the thought.
She pulled away and looked up at me confused. I chuckled again and kissed her forehead. I quickly explained, "you're so tiny, my little butterfly. That's all." She smiled and after resting her head on my chest for a few minutes, she grabbed my hand, got off the counter, and pulled me out of the guest room altogether.
When we entered the hallway, Joshua was standing there with anger, hurt, and worry in his eyes. I looked at Nikki and she smiled at me before nodding her head signaling for me to give her some time. I gave her a kiss on her forehead, nodded to Joshua and headed out to the kitchen, where a small woman, an omega I'm guessing, was bustling around.
I sat at the island and she turned around as she heard the stool move. She was clearly startled and I was quick to apologize. "I'm sorry, ma'am. I didn't mean to scare you. I was just going to wait here for my mate," I stood, trying to ask for permission to sit here. She just smiled sweetly at me.
"Oh, Alpha, no need to apologize. I should have expected people to be here. What can I get you?" She opened the fridge as she asked me. "Oh, and what would your mate like?"
I realized I didn't know anything about her. I don't know what she would want to eat. I was at a loss. Apparently I took too long to answer as she was in my face the next second.
"Young man, I asked a question!" She interrupted my thoughts. Just as I was about to answer, Nikki and Josh entered the kitchen.
"Ms. Wilson, are you tormenting my mate?" Nikki teased.
Nikita POV
I threw my arms around Josh and we both just held each other, not saying anything. I could tell by the look on his face he had no idea either. However, all of this explained why Josh and I were so close throughout all these years. I pulled back and smiled up at him, and he returned the gesture, brushing my hair out of my face and placing a kiss on my forehead.
I walked with Josh into another guest room, not wanting him to see the blood from my hand and freak out. I had so many thoughts running through my head, and I didn’t know how to react. I knew if anything, talking it out with Josh would help a lot.
When we sat down, I immediately laid my head down in his lap and he started running his fingers through my hair like we’ve always done. I let out a sigh and looked up to see him staring off into space.
“So, I need to talk to you… about a lot of things,” I finally broke the silence.
He looked down at me concerned and I sat up to look him face to face. I didn’t really know how to address everything, but he’s my brother, my twin, my best friend. No one else could help me the way he could.
“Nik, just talk to me. What’s going on in your head, besides the fact we just found out we’re actually twins, not just cousins,” he said, not sure how to approach me.
“Well… I know Xander is considered my second chance mate, and I’m SO happy to have him. However, I feel a pull towards another wolf as well. At the same time. Like I have two mates right now, and I don’t know what to do or how to feel. I don’t know if he feels the same way or not, but he won’t come closer than a few feet from me. I don’t know what to do or say or anything. I’m so lost,” I finally broke down and dropped my face to my hands, not realizing I was even crying at this point.
Josh sighed and pulled me up into his lap, rocking me back and forth. No matter that he’s only thirteen minutes older than me, he always treated me like I was his baby sister. After a few minutes of rubbing my back and letting me cry, I finally calmed enough to breathe evenly and he put me down next to him, his arm still around my shoulder.
“Maybe you should talk to both of them. Separately at first, but then altogether. Secrets and such won’t be healthy for a good relationship, and you know this. Just be honest, and maybe things will make more sense. Who’s the other wolf anyways?” Josh finally asked, clearly concerned that it may be a total asshole.
“It’s… Kade.. Xander’s beta,” I whispered, nervous to actually say the words.
When I looked at Josh, his expression made me laugh as loud as possible, and I couldn’t help it. He looked so shocked, confused, and lost it was comical. I knew he was right about talking to them, I just wasn’t sure how to go about doing this. After a few minutes of chatting, and realizing we weren’t going to get anywhere on the family issue without talking to Alpha Jonathan, we decided it best to get this over with.
Josh and I got up, hugged one another and walked out of the room, heading for the kitchen. I heard Ms. Wilson talking to none other than Xander, and the look on his face was a sight to see. He looked intimidated and worried, I had to laugh.
“Ms. Wilson, are you tormenting my mate?” I asked her, causing both of them to turn towards me. Xander looked relieved, and Ms. Wilson immediately got the largest smile I’ve ever seen.
“Nikki, dear! You didn’t tell me you got a mate! Why am I the last to know?! Oh goodness, dear, you need food! Sit, sit, sit, I’ll be right back!” she rattled off as she took off to the fridge. I sat next to Xander and he just looked at me like I was the only thing he was seeing.
“Thank you for that,” he finally said to me.
“For what? Ms. Wilson is a saint, she’d never harm a fly,” I replied, then realized how wrong I totally was. “Actually, she’d harm you if you ever harmed me. Otherwise, she’s an angel. She spoils me and treats me like I’m her granddaughter. Where do you think I got these curves from?” I gestured to my thighs mostly and his eyes darkened quickly.
“Oh, so I should be thanking her for how delicious you look right now?” he damn near whispered in my ear, growling a little at the end. I shivered, but that only lasted a second before I heard a thwack. I turned and saw Ms. Wilson had smacked him upside the head. I was shocked, mortified, and trying to hide my laughter as Xander didn’t know what just happened. He looked angry, but also confused.
“Young man, Alpha or not, you treat her with respect. The table where you’ll be eating at is not a place for this! My Nikita deserves to be treated like a lady, not a snack. Am I clear?” Ms. Wilson asked him, pointing her finger in his face. I didn’t think Xander could look more taken aback. I was afraid Ms. Wilson would lose her finger, but instead he just nodded at her.
“You’re right, ma’am. I apologize. I would never disrespect her intentionally, and the first time she experiences anything of the matter I was suggesting will be in our bed back home,” he responded. My jaw dropped. This big bad alpha just apologized to a woman who smacked the back of his head.
Ms. Wilson on the other hand beamed at his response. She was clearly impressed by his answer. However, she quickly frowned when she registered what he said. “So, Nikki… You’ll be leaving then?” she asked me, not wanting to say goodbye.
“Ms. Wilson, you knew this was a possibility when I turned eighteen. The Sapphire Moon Pack is only a couple hours away. I will visit as often as I can, I promise,” I replied as I stood and hugged her close. She sniffled and hugged me back, before quickly pulling away, wiping a stray tear, and grabbing the food from the stove and countertop. She placed the plates in front of Xander and I, and I immediately did my happy dance. Turkey bacon, a bottle of Mt. Dew, and a turkey, pickles and cheese sandwich. My favorite. She made twice as much for Xander, and he looked surprised.
“Is this turkey bacon?” he asked before taking a bite. He immediately smiled as he finished the piece of bacon.
“Do you like it? I swear I’m the only wolf who prefers turkey bacon. I absolutely love it. Ms. Wilson makes this for me every day for lunch if I’m home. I hope you enjoy it,” I replied nervously. He just laughed and kissed me on the temple before digging into his own food. I took that as a good sign and started devouring my own plate.
Josh just laughed from the other side of the table and shook his head. “Well, Nik, it looks like you share a love for turkey,” he stated in his smartass way. I just glared at him as I stuffed my face, not having a care in the world what I looked like.
“Ms. Wilson, did you know that Josh and I are twins?” I asked after I finished my last bite.
She stopped in her tracks and turned towards me. “Of course, dearie. Everyone in the pack knows you share birthdays,” she replies, not understanding what I’m saying.
“No, Ms. Wilson. Actual twins. Brother and sister type of thing.”
“What on Earth are you talking about? Your mother passed away long ago, sweetheart. There’s no way that you two are siblings.”
“Well, apparently that’s not all true. Dad wants to meet with us as he let it slip that she is his daughter,” Josh added.
Ms. Wilson looked shocked, and I knew that she was just as confused as we were. She shook her head and looked at me, then she got angry.
“I swear I will skin that man alive! If what he says is true, then he should have made that perfectly clear long ago! The things some members have said and done to you is unacceptable and it’s his fault!” she damn near screamed. I was taken aback, and Xander gently grabbed my hand trying to calm me.
“Ms. Wilson, it’s okay. I’m sure there’s a reason. We’ve got to go to this meeting. Thank you for the lunch, and I will let you know what comes up,” I said as I stood to leave, grabbing my plate and Xander’s. She quickly took them from me and waved her hand at us, telling us to leave. We all left and made our way up to the top floor and headed to the office to find out who I really am.
